I drive a Mazda Drifter 4x4 double cab.

Wouldn't really recommend one, as I've had numerous reliability issues.

IMO there's only one bakkie that can work hard all day long - the Hilux.

Although for "pose" factor, like web said, the Navarra is pimping.

Oh ja, the new Chevy Ute SS is damn dman nice. 6.0l V8. 270kw mean machine.

Corsa was the one that felt the most like a normal car, but they ruined it by making the tailgate too high.

You should need a special license for those big 4x4 and pseudo-4x4 vehicles, and be able to justify why you need one for daily use. Perhaps we can at least keep them out of the hands of people who would clearly struggle to manage a tricycle.

hey, have any of you seen that tidbit on Discovery channel about that south african dude with his Ford Bakkie... the one with the sound system... and the dream-catchers. He reckons in there that he likes the dreamcatchers, because they 'catch his dreams while he drives'. All along I thought one of the prerequisites of driving was being awake...

Usually comes on just before mythbusters, (or sometimes in the middle of), and generally when they broadcast all their motoring shows. there are two 'short showcases' of peoples cars. The one is an Afrikaans guy with the ford bakkie, the other is also an Afrikaans guy who built a hotrod to look like a toilet on wheels. Pretty amusing the first time you see it...

Humvies aren't bakkies....

They do come in a version with an open carry-section at the back...

I agree that drivers of large 4x4s should have to be specially trained and licensed. Most drive as though oblivious to traffic around them, secure in the knowledge that *they* won't be hurt.

Used to own a 1995 Toyota (2.4 I think it was) Diesel no turbo. I used it to work with our cattle in the fields. Threw on a set of snow/mud tyres and never looked back. After I sold it I used a friend's Izuzu something or other that had a turbo and bigger engine but it just didn't match up to the toyota at all over the muddy steep terrain. Took a Humvie for a few spins in the army but I was in the tanks then so it didn't really do it for me ;)

/two cents added.

Perhaps true, but I ride by a lot of 4x4 drivers who don't see me, or who do plainly stupid things in traffic. I put it down to poor observational skills and the large frame vehicle making a poor platform for observation. Also inability to realise that a 3-ton Land Rover can not stop or steer like a 1-ton BMW.

Omac: I ride a motorcycle, every day, rain or shine. It's fuel-efficient, low on pollution, and doesn't contribute to the morning traffic jams. Also perfect for one person, unlike the many one-man sedans I see in the morning traffic... :)

Yeah, bikes are the opposite of 4bys. A bike accident is more likely to inflict less damage overall, and more likely that the greater harm will be suffered by the biker in event of a multiple-vehicle mishap. Far greater damage than either a car or a 4by in event of a single-vehicle accident, though. Problem is, most of the accidents I see are a result of someone not seeing the biker or misjudging speed/evasion.

Saw a nasty single-vehicle on the Onbekend-Atterbury road where a biker swerved to avoid someone running across the road in front of him and then self-destructed after hitting the dirt at the side of the road. :( Guy didn't have a chance. Jelly in a Dainese mould.

I ride with performance tyres, and they're almost bugger-all use in the wet, so I tend to be a bit more careful. Aquaplaning on a bike is a bit hairy...

You don't drive a bike... you ride it! :) Especially sportsbikes, since most often their performance exceeds the capabilities of the rider...

Anyway, yeah... bakkies. i must admit it'd be useful to have one after getting nails in your tyres or some similar disabling problem.

Toyota Hilux 2.4 D/Cab 96 or 98 model. the newer models have way to much electronics, and if you break down anywhere, the small town mechanic can repair them.

The last thing you want when you break down in Williston, or Cradock, or Springbok, is to be told "sorry , tow to dealer, I dont have the equipment to work on this model".
Especially when the nearest dealer, is Cape Town, or Joburg, it puts a slight crimp in your travel plans :D

Nissan 1400 - too small and uncomfortable, although it goes like the clappers when the engine's tuned properly :D

Like the 1-tonner series (Toyota and Nissan) - roomy, and comfortable.

Verrrrryyy nice.... want one like that... lots of room front for mom and dad, and for the kiddywinks in behind, plus a big loading area for the wife's suitcases and my little holdall... :D:D

Performance is excellent, you don't feel like it's a diesel. Comfortable, you sit high and look at everything.
