View Full Version : VIRGIN MOBILE - You've Improved

I've been using VM for a few months now and if I were to compare the service from then to now there is a significant improvement; Internet Happy hour still sux but even if you have ADSL you feel it - believe it or not.

If its witching hour - I get download speeds of up to 16 kB/s thats bytes not bits; this is really not bad.

I am using a Samsung SGH-D900 to connect to Virgin Mobile (EDGE). I wish I could get some better signal strength here where I live in Elarduspark in Pretoria.

When I want to phone I have to piggy-back on Vodacom otherwise the signal breaks up a bit but when I connect to the internet I stick the phone to the wall somewhere an connect via bluetooth; works perfectly.

Thanks VM :)

Can't be.Are you sure you have the wap/gprs setting or the internet settings for a smartphone? And have you got the extra inialization command 100%.
Do you get the same speeds on another network?
If you said yes to all the above then i must say thats real shoddy stuff from Virgin.

My VMobile EDGE is very erratic after initial connection. It stabilizes after about 30-45mins and runs smoothly from there on.

Hi all, I have the Motorola v360, and on virgin. Sometimes I get edge, but mostly gprs. When I got the phone I downloaded the settings provided by virgin. Are that settings correct, or is there more that I must do to maybe get better internet speeds?

I hve tried a v360 in PE and have never connected on edge. Does your phone show you by means of an E or G if you are connected on edge or gprs.
I was told that if it is a vodafone. just forget it. no edge.do not know why.

Try and see if you can get EDGE on MTN, just to test if nothing else. The Vodafone firmware doesn't support EDGE AFAIK.

Buy a R2 MTN sim and give it a try, MTN have pretty good EDGE coverage.

i was told that the vlive software on the phone is the problem. So even mtn sim will not work. but i will give it a go.

I tested the same method only with my wife's phone on MTN; there weren't any problems. So it must have been on VM's side.

Problem is when they phone the desk, the only response they have is "We'll log a ticket with Cell-C, can we please have a number where they can phone you back"

I'll let u know if I ever goet a call back from them.

My phone is the vodafone version, so it didn't show an edge (E) sign. But a vc operator told me that it does connect to edge if it get the signal, but just dont show it. But what I did then, was to change the phones' software, see the sticky . http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=65740 Now I can see when I connect to edge. Vodafone is still on the phone, but the looks of the operating system changed.

I took my phone phone to customer care and insisted that they take vlive off. This will be done today. If they say they do not know then they must phone the motorola expert. He will give them the correct software version.

I"m in Capetown for a while, so I took my V360 to the vodacare in Somerset mall . They told me it couldnt be done, they even phoned a guy who does their repairs, and even he told me it isnt possible. So thats why I did it myself. Maybe V3G can tell that guys to wake up, or maybe if they just set the alarms of some phones they have, then when it rings, they will wake up.

I was told by the manager and teckie that the v360 does not even have edge. I had to show them it in their own mag. They are there to sell phones and make money. not to sort out problems.

I think I have posted this before; but this is what resolved the connection issue with my Samsung D900

In the Windows Control Panel; Open the Phones and Modems dialog.
Select the |Modems| index tab
From the list, select the Samsung Modem (If its bluetooth; it'll show Bluetooth modem) and click on Properties
Click-on the Advanced index tab and add this Extra Initialisation command:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","VDATA"

I am however not sure if this wil work with all phones, but I do know it helps for my D900.

I have done all that. THat is not the problem . It is called vlive on the vodafones that is giving problems. Just do not aske vodacom as they will tel you to get lost. Or give you the runaround

no. I am no expert but was told that vlive software causes the phone to work only on gprs and not edge. I have been all over pe and no edge. If i use a friends phone with the same network he will get edge but not me. The motorola expert seem to agree on this as he told the customer care people to change the software and it will sort out the problem. I hope

As far as I know; reloading the software is the only option. my D900 is an MTN branded phone, but this doesnt affect any of the other options.

I used my phone last night online; and I didnt have any problems connecting to VM using Bluetooth; Thanks for helping me to fix it VM :D

Internet via VM is slower than the famous Harvard tar drop experiment.

I would Google to check my facts, but I can't stand to look at another blank web page.

I have lost my Virgin'ity ...........

Zabzoo i have a D 900 too and those settings were given to me by customer service when i first started using VM and it makes no difference unless i'm in the Gauteng area because it seems to me that VM was predominantly only set up for the Gauteng area and not the rest of SA. No wonder i had a heart attack recently:sick:

Interesting - thanks for the update. Its a pity that Gauteng gets favoured because there is more business here for them.
