I know of a few people who have pre-ordered it plus movies from overseas. Sadly local distributors and retailers dont even know what HD-DVD is and amazingly dont even know what Blu-ray is as well!
Lovely country we live in. :p

The problem is a distributor to champion the platform - Ster Kinekor is obviously a movie distributor, so the tie in to BR via the PS3 makes it a natural thing for them to start bringing in BR discs. There's no similar company to drive HD-DVD here.

um, i don't think it would be that cheap even if they were selling them in sa,
you must take that direct value and then multiply it by 14% (import tax at customs).

Even if you add R300 for import tax and all that(what ever cost there could be) its still much cheaper than BR.
Oh and btw it can play HD-DVD and DVD`s.

Even if there was, they're probably have the same bloated price as the BR titles. Much easier to import in either case.

True.
Oh and apparently the HD-DVD drive upscales standard DVD's to 720p/1080p as well as a bonus feature ;)

Nu Metro would be the other company that brings in movies so they could bring HD-DVD movies in...

Are HD-DVDs region locked? Are the players?
EDIT: Nevermind, read the Take2 blurb. I wonder how future region locking would work? Would be crap to have alot of movies which suddenly don't play because your not in the right area.

I see I can get one from Amazon.co.uk for £130 (r1800) and would get it hand carried over to SA but . . .
a) is it worth that much money, and
b) am I going to struggle to find content?

a) Do you have a HD tv? Then it's worth it
b) yes...
Personally I am waiting until the cheap stand alone players come out...

b) Bummer - is it going to be a long wait for a steady supply of content?

I have the Xbox 360 HD-dvd drive. Pretty cool. The drive came with King Kong and I orderd The Departed from Amazon.com for R300 (Express delivery). BR movies cost R400 here. The only viable BR player at the mo is the PS3. That thing is so overpriced. R400 for BR movies and some games are going for R700. Rediculous!
