View Full Version : MWeb launches own WiMax trials
http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=6309
MWeb even threw in a B-BEE card to try and trump its competitors in !CASA's mind - is this a sign of weakness or confidence on MWeb's part?
As much as I generally do not agree with MWeb's traditional overcharging business model, I would support MWeb getting Telkodemonopolies' WiMax licence - if Telkodemonopolies' under-the-table dealings ever come to light...

Sweet! Any mweb user got chosen on myadsl?
Give us some feedback soon :D

What equipment do you require to access a WiMax network?

I would want to get on this trial for the simple reason that the connections will be uncapped!!

they'll probably choose a few non-abusers ;P

I'm disappointed with the mentioned speeds.

I don't know why this is the case, but whenever there is a trial like this, I NEVER see any MyADSL users being selected for the trial. Telkom Wimax, Neotel and now MWEB Wimax - nobody from MyADSL. C'mon guys ... we are the perfect candidates for these trials since we'll perform all the required tests and give good and constructive feedback.
Let me guess, people who are taking part in these trials, only check their mail once every 2 weeks.
Lets hope that some MyADSL users get chosen.

I am also getting suspicious of these trials...
how likely is is that no myadsl members ever get chosen?
The speeds are terrible, I was hoping for at least 4mb to compete with Telkom

WHAT ABOUT PE
thanks :)
i wouldn't mind to be trail user.... depending on cost.

Trialists are being recruited from MWEB’s member base of home and business users within the relevant coverage areas.
... MWeb's traditional overcharging business model
I think nobody on these forums like being overcharged, that's why nobody is with MWEB, and therefore not considered for the trials?

Randburg ---> 20km radius. Wonder if it reaches me :/ Doubt it though
Anyway we have MWEB :) so if I ever get the trial I will let you all know :p
MWEB wasn't my choice though I am just sharing the connection with the family living next door on the same property

Jansen said MWEB will be trialling a number of uncapped connectivity options aimed at the consumer...
And then after that they will probably start capping like iBurst did

Yes, I am quite disappointed with the slow speeds as well. Unfortunately this is probably related to the 802.16d vs e battle. And seeing that the trial users, as in Telkom's case, are floating around somewhere in the ether as opposed to using us bunch of culprits :D, we have to guess once more. Most of the 802.16e customer premises equipment (CPE) is currently in the indoor self install form factor (remember, no 802.16e certified equipment exist yet), meaning that they need to contend with walls to penetrate. Although e has a better uplink radio link budget than d due to many brilliant nice-ities with which I will not bore the forum, for indoor coverage you require significantly more base stations than for a 802.16d outdoor CPE coverage (a factor of between 6 and 8 times). In the spirit of running a restricted pilot, I doubt whether sufficient numbers of Base Stations were deployed to give blanket coverage in such a way that the CPE will hook the highest modulation scheme. (a bit backward in my opinion - I mean, if you cannot emulate best case in even a small restricted pilot, what's the chance of ever achieving it on a commercial scale?)
However, I must add that 1Mbps on WiMAX is absolutely uncomparable to even 1.8Mbps on HSDPA. Latency is 20-30ms as opposed to hundreds of ms on HSDPA. Furthermore, think of the speed limit in the following manner- it is like comparing 120km/h in a BMW M3 to an E20 taxi - the taxi might reach that speed on a downhill whereas the BM can do much faster, but the driver decides to stick to that limit- HSDPA "theoretically" can do 1.8Mbps with current coding schemes (under load probably 1.2-1.3Mbps) whereas WiMAX, like ADSL can do MUCH higher, but you get provisioned for your chosen download speed and you ALWAYS get that (provided of course the site is fast enough)...Oh yes, another thing, WiMAX is much closer to symmetry between up and down, and that DOES play a part in how fast acknowledges and URL requests are sent, not even to mention how much faster email is sent.

Hannes. Thats what Im looking for, the latency bit :D
A 1mbps connection with latency as low as you are suggesting will keep me happy for a long time, provided Im not limited by any caps!!
Im amazed how wimax can achieve such low latency

Yes, I am quite disappointed with the slow speeds as well. Unfortunately this is probably related to the 802.16d vs e battle.Probably more due to the fact that ICASA is only allocating 5MHz of spectrum to test licensees, which limits the aggregate throughput per sector.
With 10-20MHz one can get more creative with access speeds without resorting to silly contention ratios.
meaning that they need to contend with walls to penetrate .... for indoor coverage you require significantly more base stations than for a 802.16d outdoor CPE coverage (a factor of between 6 and 8 times).
Outdoor fixed Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) units will be installed at the homes and offices of the majority of trialistsSeem more interested in fixed installations with properly mounted & alligned receivers. Probably looking for an experience closer to un-wired ADSL than a nomadic/mobile like one as you would get with iBurst or HSDPA.
MWEB will be trialling the 802.16e Mobile WiMAX standard
Even tho fixed, 802.16e still used for improved spectral efficiency & better NLOS capabilities of OFDMA.
MWEB’s eight WiMAX base stations are located in greater Johannesburg in Boksburg, Randburg, Sandton, Soweto and Victory Park, and in Cape Town on the Foreshore, at N1 City, and in Plumstead.I'm guessing thats going to be at the MWeb Business offices  Thats about 600m from my place! Doubt I'll get a trial though - wouldn't touch their other internet services even if you gave me a really big stick...

Ja theres one in Plumstead CPT too, where my curent iBurst tower is, but you have to be a MWeb member for the trial.
Their price will probably suck anyway, seeing as you will be paying the R100-200 MWeb premium over and above whatever they work out for their pricing..

People on trial for services typically have to sign a "Non Disclosure Agreement" or similar. That's why you never hear from trialists...

Basically stopping them from complaining if the service is cr@p:p

I just got a call today from a friendly lady at Mweb with my username and password for the trial: apparently the engineers/installation crew will be calling me next... ;)
A friend of mine is trialling Wimax with MWeb.
On day 2 I think.
I will ask him to comment in this thread.
