I say either do away with it altogether or make public holidays out of other religious holidays. Kind of unfair that many of the significant Christian days are public holidays but none of the significant days of other religions are.

If a religious event is important to believers then it shouldn't matter whether it is a public holiday or not.

I don't think the issue is it's importance, but whether people can get off work to celebrate it. In that sense it's unfair to people of other faiths.

Since we live in a very advanced society with no unemployment, everyone earning a good income and strong medical, security and housing services for anyone, we can afford to have one of the highest number of 'public holidays' in the world.
We don't need the extra productivity....

Fair enough, but do you need to be off work to celebrate it?

Which is why I say rather can them all. Rather give people x number of days leave from work for personal reasons, religious holidays included. Why force the entire country into celebrating xmas and easter? We could have a far more productive workforce this way because there will almost always be a certain number of people working, instead of shutting down the entire company for y number of days. Remove the other public holidays as well, if people want to commemorate Sharpville and Women's Day then it can come out of their personal leave.

Would you prefer spending Christmas and easter working instead of spending it with your family?

Wasn't my point, I assumed that you linked the need to have the day off directly to celebrating the meaning of that day....

Cool I see your point, but I assumed that the celebration included family time ;)
Heck, add the jewish and muslim holidays too. The more the better. Less work for me
