It's a bit cold for puff adders. The most dangerous one you're likely to see is a rinkaals.
I could be wrong, but I don't there are any other majorly poisonous snakes to worry about in JHB.

The trouser snake - very common in Gauteng.

I hear that that is a very small snake and rather shy ? More like a worm some scientists say, harmless and docile ?

It largely depends on the snake's habitat, some grow very large in the right conditions.

They are very dangerous... They predominantly attack females.... and when they do inject "venom" in their female victims, the victims sometimes feel k*k en swells up for 9 months... :D

Havent seen a puff adder this side of town before though...

Species endemic to the Lowveld:
Spotted Harlequin Snake
Striped Harlequin Snake
Sundevall's Garter Snake
Rinkhals
Mozambique Spitting Cobra
Snouted Cobra
This does not mean you wont find the other species here, just if you find a snake it is most like one of these.

Because of the region and the rain fall season the common snakes for Gauteng is:
Poffadder
Ringkals
Black mamba
and of course the one that you'll at least find in your house about 2-3 time in your life - Brown House snake(Not dangerous btw)
However the urban building ect. make the above 3 very rare unless u live near a big veld or on a farm/Plot.
The last 1 you'll find all over Jo'burg

Just be warned you may not keep a brown house snake as a pet in Gauteng without a permit.

That's just sick man.
I have a real phobia for snakes. I can't even watch them thru a glass cage without getting all numb. I have killed allot of snakes in my life.
The only good snake is a dead snake. ;)
But I must admit some of them are really nice. The rinkaals is a very nice looking snake, However I'll only inspect it with it's head hacked off and about 8 meters away.
I have killed the following snakes and had a nice look at them.
1. Pofadder.
2. Rinkaals
3. Swart Mamba
4. Kooper Kapel - Not sure of the spelling but it's a Cobra
5. Mozambiek spitting Cobra
6. Rooi lippie
7. Brown house snake
and a few i didn't know what they are.
This is all from living on a farm while growing up. I lost a dog killing the Kapel as my Foxie tried to kill it and was bitten. If you really hate snakes get a Foxie or Jack Russel. They killed snakes on the farm like no-ones business.
In Urban areas and my house I've only seen the Brown house snake yet. So I doubt anyone will have to fear snakes in the urban areas.

I've only killed rhinkals before...but shame, they just lie on their back to let u kill...after growing up a bit, I decided to keep them for a while then let them off, out of my property.
Just because they have the potential to poison u doesnt mean they will :p
I had a short stumpy snake once, everytime i touched it, it would slip around like a crocidile...was really cute...then one of those long curvy beaked, noisy bird ate it...
Anyways :p
What scorpions we get here in JHB?

I found a spotted Harlequin snake in the Eastern Cape, it was very colorful. Though I dont remember that its venom was potent...? Are you sure it is a dangerous snake?

Best stay away from them. Had Snakes as pets and they dont like human beings but will happily sit around your hand or in your pocket.
