Well it depends on the DSL/Cable speed, a T1 is around 1.5MB, most DSL/Cable options should be faster but they probably have a higher contention ratio.
Yup ADSL1 has a max of 8Mbps while cable can go higher but if lots of people in your area have it then contention comes into play and the speed drops.

These connections are all pretty slow compared to VDSL2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_High_Speed_Digital_Subscriber_Line_2) and "Fiber to the premises (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiber_to_the_premises)". In Hong Kong for instance you can get a 1 Gbit/s fiber connection.

It's dissapointing we don't get cable TV here in SA so we could get the fast cable internet, but rather not some company will probably make the prices outrageous if they did bring cable TV to SA.

ADSL can go faster, but it depends on how many people have it in an area. T1 is more reliable and consistent.
They aren't the fastest internet links available by a long shot. (Well. Except in South Africa.)
