Has anyone had a problem with the current series VW Polo's rear brake drums rusting shut? VW claims that it's a common problem with drum brakes and just cleaned out the rust, but I don't buy it. Can I insist that VW replace the drums/install discs?
I know I posted this query in another thread, but it seems that got deleted... if anyone replied then I didn't see it. Feedback would be appreciated.

How old is the car? This is a common problem on a lot of cars, and happens due to a lot of reasons. I'm getting my Polo's drums skimmed this week, but not due to rust.
I've seen it on Ford and Toyota as well before

Does the car stand unused?

I always assumed that the rusting was due to the heat produced during braking but a better quality of steel or alloy etc. should be able to improve the problem.

It's a current year model. Used every day. Just locked up.
What do you mean by getting your drums skimmed? Thought you only did that to discs?

Well all previous models from 2002-2006 had discs at the rear, but this year the cheapskates have changed them to drums for all models below the 2.0i. But they increased the price of the car, surely there should be some form of recourse for this?

What do you mean by getting your drums skimmed? Thought you only did that to discs? It can also be done for drum brakes. Must be cheaper than replacing them.
