Hi this is not those boodles threads..:D
We had this discussion at work and we all argued about this:confused::(
Is it possible,if we had the money to build a bridge from Simontown to gordons bay..I know else where in the world they do have this..eg,San fransico,florida..etc.;
What are the pro,s and what are the cons.
I say it is possible but will we fk up the ecosystem and the great white population. What about storms,What about the depth of the sea.I mean how deep is it there.
I mean think you ride your car to gordons bay in like a straight line

HelloThere

i dont think it would be feasable. There is not much demand for a bridge.
Gordans Bay?:p
Gordons Bay?
Where in Gordons Bay? What are you talking about? Why a bridge? For what? Leave my town alone! They already want to split this place in 2 (They want to build the N2 through the town - move it right into the middle of the town ).

I am just asking if it would be possible.

I know the navy also uses the bay for training, both for sea rescues as well as submarines.... Knowing our navy, I can just imagine a sub driving into a pillar of the bridge ;)
A 40 or 50km bridge over water would also make it one of the longest in the world (longest is 2km odd in Hong Kong - part of the new airport they built a few years ago, just to give you an idea). Not sure if it's still the longest though. IMHO, highly unlikely...
FYI, Tsing Ma Bridge at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsing_Ma_Bridge Sure it does have far more capacity than any bridge in Africa, but over water distance... No bridge in the world comes close to the distance required over the bay :) Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_suspension_bridges which confirms, longest bridge over water in the world, 1.9KM... So yes, -highly- unlikely

if money was'nt a problem it would be possibe.....i am in the piling game and we build bridges all over africa....piece of cake...
we have just installed some piles for a bridge in Richards Bay that where 59m deep.

If money wasn't a problem, anything would be possible - even taking over the world. You have to draw the line -SOMEWHERE- I suppose... shrugs.

What for? So some 50 or so people a day can save some petrol? I don't understand the need.

Sure, Ok. What/how does/would it could/would aleviate (sp?) congestion on land. Could/would it improve on traveling times?
If i need to get to my mistress in a hurry, will it be much quicker?
Will the Whales distract my driving?
It the bridge is 40km's and there is a crash in the middle - thats one serious delay.

Rather sort out a high speed ferry or two. Then your wife's PI wouldn't be able to take photos of your car outside the mistresses apartment :)

We could really use a bridge running out of Tableview across the bay into town. Marine Drive to town is a nightmare in the peak hours! Thank God I don't work in the CBD anymore.
But I think a bridge with a Tollgate over the bay would create jobs and it would relieve alot of pressure on the congestion.
Also if ran through or passed by Robben Island it would be good for tourism, They could put up a filling station and make the Island more accessible then the government ferry!
/2c down! :p

Valid point!
I think it would just spoil the beauty of the bay, but having travelled between Simonstown and Stellenbosch a few times I did wish for a bridge.

Sheesh, would be a little pointless to build a massively expensive bridge spanning the bay when there's a perfectly good (quiet) road running round the edge of it.

And people just love throwing trash out there windows, prefer the ocean to atleast look clean

How did that road become quiet again? Last time I was in Cape Town the taxis/drunken pedestrians/skatonka bakkies were terrible along that Maccassa road(?). And then you've got to start/end your journey on the Somerset side driving past that fsking smelly sewerage farm?

For sure. After a month you could walk across on 3 foot deep raft of stompies

That road always seems deserted when I've been on it, though granted I've never driven on it at rush hour or anything like that.
I can't imagine that there are too many people who need to drive between Gordon's Bay and Simonstown on a daily basis, or many goods that need to be transported between the two towns.

A 22-mile bridge that its builders claim is the world's longest sea-crossing structure was formally linked-up Tuesday just south of the business hub of Shanghai.
The bridge links Shanghai to the industrial city of Ningbo across Hangzhou Bay, cutting the distance between them from about 250 miles to just 50 miles.
Officials welded together a final section to complete the link at a ceremony attended by several hundred workers from the various companies building the bridge.
The Chinese sea bridge which will cut travel by 200 miles
Costing 11.8 billion yuan (£0.77 billion), the structure will open to traffic next year following completion of the six-lane roadway that will permit vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 62 miles per hour.
The bridge, a mix of viaducts and cable-stayed spans to allow shipping to pass beneath, lies just south of the Yangtze River Delta, one of China's most economically vital regions which is undergoing a massive construction boom aimed at boosting transport links.
Just north of Shanghai, builders this month connected the final link in a 20.13-mile bridge across the Yangtze, said to be the longest cable-stayed structure of its kind.

Yes please so we can transport tik across from Simons bay to Gordon's bay without selling / loosing the load in Khayelitsha!!! :D
C'mon man there are more priorities than a bridge from SB to GB!!!!!!
That is one bridge that I will be *****/k@k scared to cross during the winter months, have you seen the monster waves coming into Muizenberg during that period?
I already had nightmare when I was a kid just driving down Baden Powell road in winter and that on land man.
The idea is good , but thought is crazy.

At times it do get so a tad rough on the edges, but the bridge could be higher up
Imagine you on that bridge and rough seas under you and a freak wave hit the car, You can't wet your pant because it wet already from the freak wave, and you half way 10km ahead and 10km behind, eish, It's a nightmare.LOL
Think: The Perfect Storm.

Ja, and have a restaurant halfway, so we and eat seafood while watching the sharks and other marine life swim by. Cool:)
why not build a tunnel instead.
Because we don't like* tunnels this side of CT. :p

Why the need for a permanent fixture across the ocean.
A simpler, more eco-pleasing means of easy access to Simonstown from Gordons Bay requires using medieval technology.
A large trebuchet situated on Gordons Beach and a large net on Simonstown beach. Then it would simply be a matter of calculating the trajectory required, taking the south-easter into account, and whoosh !
Cheap, effective and can be moved easily to compensate for continental drift.
