Man I used this in the UK on a recent trip.....works so well all my family are converts. In the UK the traffic updates and speed camera update are working and up to date. Finding addresses with postal codes works so well. Big UP!:D

I'm hating this software, my Garmin Nuvi recently packed up so I thought I would give Garmin Mobile a try on my N95 and it doesn't do it for me.

My handset spends more time awaiting better GPS accuracy than it does directing me.

Is it possible I've done something wrong with regards the installation?

Hmmm. Maybe an updated download is in order for my E90. Someone once said that Garmin XP was a Nuvi on steroids but I spend more time waiting for "better accuracy" which sometimes takes as long as actually getting to my destination. But then I also get lost enroute because the maps have a mind of their own and change views on a whim so it's a fiddly thing that requires one to pull over and sort the mess out. I have the Southern Africa sd chip which was useless in Europe and I couldn't find the UK, French and Spanish sd chip in any shop there late last year. Wonder what that Euro map chip costs All told, on top of the one time activation fee of R800 odd rand it's a nice bit of gear but you need to decide which screen you'll use first. Not easy to switch between screens at all. Verdict- Dangerous to drive with holding it in your hand.

I almost forgot. Running XP on the E90 drains the battery fast and is there anyone in CT who can show me how to use/upgrade the damn thing properly.

Huh? You hold it in your hand while driving? I use it with my E90 in a proper holder that I used to use for a Pocket PC. And it's plugged into a car charger.
There is a Europe Citymaps out there somewhere which is huge.

Huh? You hold it in your hand while driving? . Well where else am I supposed to put it. I drive several different cars none of which are mine. It rolls off the dash.
And if it's too far from the windscreen it looks for "accuracy"

Hello all
got .80 installed and app works fine on n95-1, good signal on int gps.
But I upload maps with mapsource, SAv1.5 map id 1214 and it still says no map in the bottom corner.
Any ideas? .60 worked fine.

But I upload maps with mapsource, SAv1.5 map id 1214 If I am not mistaken the map id for the Southern Africa Streetmaps, Version 1.5 is 1096. The latest Southern Africa Streetmaps March 2008 map id is 1214.

Bought the "Garmap Africa Series 2008 - March" DVD from Cape Union Mart. It's only R99 and will save you plenty of download time. The DVD also includes Mobile XT, Map Source, POI Loader etc. etc.

The DVD is so cheap because it contains all the software and maps, but not the unlock codes.

To begin with, you will need to download the Garmin POI loader from here: http://www8.garmin.com/software/POILoaderforWindows_252.exe
You will also have to download the Road Safety data from the Garmap website. In order to download tha latest data you will first have to register on this site: http://www.garmap.co.za/PoiLoader.asp#PoiData. I would strongly suggest you also download the "Download_Readme_xxxxxxxx.zip" file which has detailed info on the inzipping procedure and nessecary folder structure. After unzipping the relevant files, you just need to run the POI loader application and the rest is easy.

Yes, it works and you can even download the Garmap streetmaps AND T4A to the phone at the same time.

To switch between maps, go to Tools, Manage My Data, Map Sets, select MapSource and check the maps you want to be active.

I have been following this thread for a while now, now I got the Garmin XT working on my phone, with the internal GPS, I copied the ISO maps file from my Garmin Nuvi because I couldnt get a download link that works...

Now can someone please help me out, I will be forever greatfull!
Anyone please I really want this to work.

Just let me know if I am using the wrong map id or something or where can I actually find the right id, I did use the keygen and tried a few codes and pasted into the required files

To all you gentle folk of this forum. I wonder whether someone could shed some light on my dilemma. I will try and explain this best I can.
I successfully installed garmin XT and SA v6 map on my N95, all was working well until I became adventurous and decided to install the new city navigator Europe NT 2008. All went well with the install BUT and that’s a big BUT, I have now lost my SA map. Under manage my data the Europe map is present but no SA map. Could it be that when uploading Europe map to the n95 the SA map data got deleted??

Have I maybe done something wrong somewhere?
Can Garmin xt on n95 handle more than 1 map?
Does the SA v6 map have the same file format as the Europe 2008?

Please help!

Thanking you in advance

Grem, I assume you uploaded said maps through MapSource? MapSource generates a mapset incorporating all the maps you have selected & uploads it to the phone - only one mapSET at a time.

Thus, if you uploaded ONLY Europe to your phone, it would've over-written the SA map. What you'll need to do to have both, is to select the European map for upload, then go VIEW -> SWITCH TO PRODUCT & select your SA map. Mark that for upload, and send both to the phone.

Then, in MobileXT on the phone, you can activate/deactive the needed maps in TOOLS -> MANAGE MY DATA -> MAP SETS -> MAPSOURCE (on left softkey)

Hope that helps!

Many thanks for the fast response Enigma243. Yes you are correct, I did upload from Mapsource (should have mentioned that in my post). I will upload tonight again and let you know if successful or not. I presume I don’t have to go through generating a new .unl file as it is still present on the phone so all I would do is upload the maps again.

Do I just overwrite the existing data on the phone with the new maps or do I have to delete something?
I have read in previous posts that when one mapset is loaded into the Garmin Mobile XT then a second set of codes must be generated the same way as above for each set of maps with its own unique mapID code. All the the unlock codes must all be entered via Notepad without any spacing in-between
Example: QTQF5DA4C9TM976X6NZFRSSKZMCSTX2RWBYV7YEU3UBLT4WWQT
However when I uploading the SA map to the phone I was asked for the code (which was done) but when uploading Europe map I was not asked for the code. Any advice before the attempted re-upload takes place would be grateful.

Cheers

***update***

Process followed: In Mapsource - highlighted all regions in Europe with the select tool (which transferred regions into left hand side pane window within Mapsource) - VIEW -> SWITCH TO PRODUCT & select SA map – highlighted all regions in the SA map (once again transferred over to left hand window) – transfer to device (N95).

Transfer completed – disconnected phone from pc – would you like to launch GXT (YES) – screen of death, dead, deader, deadest.

To elaborate, GXT started to launch but timed out and eventually just faded away.
Has anybody experienced this?

When uploading a single map (whether that is SA or Europe) all works fine.
Has anybody installed more than 2 maps on a N95, is it possible?

I had to remove GXT from N95 and re-install, now back to where I was originally. Any advise or recommendations would be much appreciated.

I can always blame operator error, oh yes that’s me, dawn.

I saw the same once on my N82.

Check that:
1) Your phone is updated to the latest firmware.
2) You STOP the usb connection first before removing the USB cable. I had a corrupt memory card and had to format it complete first. Stop the USB connection on the PC, then a message will appear on the phone, select OK first before removing cable (On N82, I suspect the USB connection is only stopped after this since a USB icon is still visible in the background)

I currently have threee maps on my phone:
a) SA street maps (from Garmap Africa series, March 2008)
b) East Africa street maps (from Garmap Africa series, March 2008)
c) Tracks4Africa

Definitely stopped usb connection properly before disconnecting. Also thought that something got corrupted somewhere along the line but don’t really want to format the memory card. I will give it another go before formatting.

OK, I just managed to stuff it up again.
My phone freezed up and after it rebooted itself the memory card was wiped.

Come to think of it, both times this happened I did the same thing:

I started to download new maps to the device and in MapSource I clicked the Abort button.

It seems that aborting the download process corrupts the memory card !!!

Fortunately, I had a memory card backup. In Data Transfer mode, I copied the entire contents of the memory card to a folder on my PC. You can then recover the memory card, after a format, by copying the contents back. (Afaik, the PC Suite backup only copies you personal settings and not everything on the memory card)

You realise when you get a little older that beer doesnt solve everything ;)
On the flipside the DVD from cape union is super handy, I cant say I like the waterways and topo maps because they overcrowd everything.

The easier way is to pull the Gunlocker and simply unlock your maps before you send them to the phone. That way you dont have to mess around with silly text files to unlock detailed maps. every map you install on the pc gets unlocked at once.

The whole thing about multiple maps is still a gray area and some people have got it to work with various degrees of success. Google around if you are willing to go to the hassle of multiple maps.
Me personally I keep all of the data on the PC and will install other maps when I need them and backup the existing ones on the phone.

Luther,

TomTom is probably better than Garmin, but there are two issues with runing it on your phone... thusfar the only way to get it runing without forking out R2500 for it is to re-install and crack it every time you wanna use it... and TomTom maps for SA are scarce... if you have a solution to those issues, I'd love to try it...

Is the 6110 an S60 phone? Cos if it isn't, Garmin XT won't work on it.

Yes, it is and the Garmin works perfectly on it, far better than it works on the N95 and others.

Does anyone have the Europe city nav v8 map code to generate the unlock code????

if you installed it from a disc, then it should be in a folder with a number next to it in your garmin app folder on your pc, use that number for the mapid

TT, google for Gunlocker, it will unlock them before you transfer them to your phone.
The easiest way to get hold of the maps is to buy the dvd from cape union mart, its R99.

anybody knows a solution for this?
When I go to "where to", then choose "food, hotels..", and select, for example, "food & drink" and "all categories, it shows a restaurant called "Barranco" near me.
However, if I go to "where to, then choose "food, hotels..." and choose "spell name", then I type "Barranco", it just doesn't find anything.
Why does this happen? I want to be able to search for restaurant names.

I had a problem similar to this. It happened when I tried to load too many maps or map types ie Streets maps and waterway maps...or Topo maps. Load only one map type....or country. When I had Australia and SA loaded, my address searches came up with incorrect places....GarminXT only wanted SA or Australia....but not both.

Almost - if you go to Tools -> Manage My Data -> Mapsets & then select MapSource with the left softkey, you can change the map(s) you have active. If you've got the wrong one selected, your searches will be in the wrong map's data.

I don't have the MapSource option...
there are 2 map sets listed:
1-Worldwide Autoroute Basemap
2-Detailed maps

and I can't really choose anything, when I select one of them it only shows the path to the maps and that's all...

Go out and buy the latest edition of SA Computer Magazine. Garmin Mobile XT for the Symbian 60 is on the cover disc which you can use for a 30 day trial. It also includes the latest routable South African maps. Included is a PDF document with installation instructions.

OK - my bad - I always have my phone's Data Transfer drive (card readers mode if you like) set to drive B: and Mapsource does not like that. Changing it to a normal type letter, like H: or G: got Mapsource to pick it up. So now I can load v1.5 maps onto the phone.

Will first try to get the new 2008 ones going....

To get the latest version of Garmin Mobile XT go here : http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-11034-00

Download the Unit Software for your device as well as the two additional software packages (base maps and support files).

Plug you phone into the computer in mass storage mode or put the memory card in a card reader. End result is you need to access the memory card as a drive on your computer.

Run the unit software installer then the two additional software installers. All of them must install onto your device memory card.

You must then run the installer on your device, for Symbian devices go to App Manager and you will find GarminMobileXT with a status of Not Installed - so Install it.

After it installed open it from the Applications menu, select your setting, cancel all the bluetooth and find GPS non-sense, go to Setting and then About. Below the IMEI and IMSI numbers you will find the Device ID (Card ID). Make a note of the Card ID somewhere and then put that into this keygen : http://rainweargirl.com/gmxtkg.exe

Copy the 25 digit code it makes into a text file that you name SW.UNL and place this in the Garmin folder on your device memory card.

Open Garmin on the device and under settings change the remote GPS to built-in/attached.

Now your device is running the latest version of Garmin Mobile XT with Base Maps.

Another adventure is to get detailed maps on it - but someone else can help with that. Just keep that Card ID you noted because you will need that (along with your details map set ID) if you which to use detailed maps.

Hello,

Does anybody know how to how to unlock the GARMAP Africa series 2008 March edition DVD ? I need a product serial key.

I have a Nokia 6110 Navigator phone with Mobile XT ver 41080.

I tried to download maps, but there was always a time out, so I went and bought the DVD for R99 at Outdoor Warehouse.

Put the DVD into the drive and the auto run started.......

I got as far as the request for a product serial key.
How do I generate one?
Did I do anything wrong ? Is that why the setup is asking for a key?

I have seen quite a few post of other people who have also bought the DVD and they were able to overcome this obstacles with greater ease than me.

Your help would be appreciated

Thanx

I tried to download maps, but there was always a time out, so I went and bought the DVD for R99 at Outdoor Warehouse.

Put the DVD into the drive and the auto run started.......

I got as far as the request for a product serial key.
How do I generate one?
Did I do anything wrong ? Is that why the setup is asking for a key?

I have seen quite a few post of other people who have also bought the DVD and they were able to overcome this obstacles with greater ease than me.

Your help would be appreciated

Thanx
The keygen can only generate a 25 digit unlock code for your device. To unlock the installation of MapSource on your computer you need to get a key from Garmap - they will charge you a fortune if you are a first time buyer.

Also - the new 2008 maps DOES NOT WORK ON MOBILE XT.

I have tried with the .img file posted here earlier and my friend, how owns a legit copy of the 2008 maps, has also not been able to get it working on Mobile XT.

The best maps to use on Mobile XT (even the latest 4.20.20) is Garmin MapSource Southern Africa Streetmaps, Topo & Rec Version 1.5

It is 800mb so if someone wants it I am willing to mail it to you on DVD. Just PM me.

Thank you for wealth of info on this pages. I trully appreciate that. I have installed and loaded maps all fine but having little problem.

I can calculate route and all that but I am not getting sound navigation. Is GarminXT supposed to provide turn by turn navigation too? or just like Nokia Maps free version which doesnt provide any VOICE GUIDED NAVIGATION?

Which step I missed? Please advice.
thank you all again for such wonderful site.

What do you expect, must they give you the N95 included too?

Update....

V5 works absolutely wonderfully if you do a fresh install...

1. Just remove the garmin folder.... (backing up your important stuff)

2. Install v5

3. Copy in your old voice files, vehicle files, map sets and the unlock file

4. copy in GPX files and the POI files

5. Run the installer in the root of your memory card.

Done

What's the location for the map sets? Do I need to remove the Garmin folder, or can I just rename it?

The mapset should be placed in the *:\garmin\ folder

If you have enough space to do so, it shouldn't be a problem to just rename the garmin folder to something else and install again. just remember to copy over your old data into the new folder...

tried it out this morning and I must say, totally LOVING the new interface... much clearer and easier to read.

they've also fixed the problem whereby pop-up alerts would prevent you from seeing the driving instructions....

also the application seems to run a bit faster.... :-D

Thanks for your feedback. I did exactly what you said and it seems to be working now.

I'll do some testing today. I was pleased with the previous version although on many occasions it crashed. When using Tracking it happened more frequently.

OMG it is hot ! I love the new look and feel plus it is a lot snappier. I had the same problems because I installed V5.00 over V4.80 but after fully uninstalling and deleting the old one and then installing the new one it works perfectly.

Go buy the DVD, R99. Install mapsource, use the keygen to unlock the maps, 1214 for street 1215 for topo, that's the map id. Put in your phone's GPS code, don't generate a code for the phone, just generate the code for the map.

Sorry dude, I'm an idiot. Can you please explain what the use for Topo maps are. I don't really want to go through all the trouble of adding them to my phone if it's only used for hiking.

I'll mostly use my navigation for in-car routing.

I've experienced lock ups with all the previous versions also. When approaching my home, without exception, it'll crash.

By turning on the Tracks feature it also crashes from time to time. This type of crash is much more severe, as I loose all data, and have to setup voice preferences and the like.

I can however import the GPX file, to restore my previous GPX data.

I have uninstalled v5. Will install it again when it works.

I had one or two unexpected program shutdowns on my E90 when I initially installed v5. Then I updated my firmware, okay it's only been a week or so, but since then it's worked flawlessly, so that seems to have done the trick for me. The previous version used to get very confused when opening/closing the phone while navigating, whereas v5 doesn't have a wobbly when doing this.

From what I read they say the wifi performance increase is only marginal, but hey.. it's a good reason.

I uninstalled Garmin first, moved the SD card Garmin folder to my PC, then did a complete backup of the phone. After the firmware update I restored from backup, then installed v5 and the support files, copied back the maps and .unl file to the Garmin folder on the card. Worked just fine after that.

Doesn't sound too thrilling to me.....

Changes made from version 5.00.00 to 5.00.10:

* Provide support for Samsung INNOV8 (i8510).
* Change default vehicle icon to blue car.
* Correct an application shutdown when frequently recalculating a route.
* Correct the displayed speed limit value for some specific roads.
* Correct the blank green screen displayed when switching to the map page.
* Improve the layout of the Local Search capability.
* Improve the layout of the map page for the Nokia E90 screen size.

Hi Guys...

I'm from Namibia... Got Garmin Mobile XT 5.00.10 running on my phone with the Southern African Streetmaps 2008 March (MapID 1214)...

Have ANYONE tried to Where To... and then entering a street name? The very first prompt 1/5 asks you to enter a state... does not matter what you type in it gives a "none" result...

PS. I have a Nuvi710 which my Wife uses in her car... with the same Map (MapID 1214) loaded and cracked in the same manner... there you can enter the streetname without probs...

There's a button in Mapsource with a yellow polygon on it. Use that tool & click+drag to select the maps you want to send to your phone. Use Ctrl+click to select/deselect additional maps. Once you're happy, use the button that says 'Send to Device' to send the mapset to your phone.

PS - phone has to be connected in data storage/'flash drive' mode, otherwise you'll need to use a memorycard reader...

There is indeed, firstly enter *#0000# into your handset and see which version of firmware you have. Im pretty sure its pre-20.0.016
What you should do is to upgrade the firmware with the nokia update tool in the pc suite. Once you have done that then you get a software option in tools, settings, personalization, display there will be an option to rotate screen that will work nicely.

I have a Nokia E65 which doaes not have a built in GPS, but can use an external bluetooth GPS, which I do with Nokia maps, I have loaded Garmin XT but am unable to connect to my generic (Falcolm) GPS, as mobile XT say Garmin GPS only.
Is there any way round this problem?

Nope not yet. Didnt even know it's out.

Looks like you can get a copy for R8.95.

Then the question I guess is what's this one's MapId.

Hi, I recently installed Garmin Mobile XP onto my Nokia E71 and transferred a few T4A Maps to the card memory using MapSource. All works fine accept all the town labels are abbreviated and the main road labels are not shown. Can someone please advice me on how to fix this? Pleaseeee!!

Hi all, I'm new here and live in South Africa, 33 years old and new to Garmin Mobile XT. I just downloaded the latest version and hope to install it on my 6220c and to get it working. I do not have maps for South Africa and do not know where to get any. I got a link on zshare but zshare does not support download managers so I am unable to use it as I make use of a data bundle and if my download crashes I lose all the data downloaded up to that point. Does anyone have any ideas how to get a map of SA? Nokia Maps is not very good. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for reading,

Jennifer

Hi Rocket-Boy:)

Thank you for replying! I did that yesterday, I got the CD at Incredible Connection here in Benoni and installed the SA maps to my PC and got it unlocked with the KG. I uploaded it to my 6220c and it works great! I usd it today for the first time and it seems to navigate fine. Its way better than Nokia Maps in the sense it doesn't need to connect to the internet to lookup addresses when you want to start navigating. And Nokia Maps 3 is worse than 2! You can't search an address without the postcode so you need to keep a directory with the whole country's postcodes with you always when using Nokia Maps 3. Its ridiculous.

funny though I was just looking for an address now and I couldnt find it in Garmin at all but nokia maps was happy to point it out. Its nice to be able to have two different mapping systems on one device though.

Thanks for these detailed instructions. I followed along and got GarminMobileXTforSymbianS603rdEdition_50050.exe working on my N95 8gb. I want to now put in the actual maps. Any advice? I'm visiting Iceland right now and would love to use the Iceland map here that I found in this thread:
http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=257636. I know the map ID is 830 according to http://www.tr-kaynak.com/2009/04/garmin-mapid-harita-kodlari and w/ that, using gmxtkg.exe, I got a map unlock code. But what do I do? where do I put the Icld_Krt_3...5.zip file that I downloaded?

Does this app work independently, or do you require an external bluetooth enabled GPS? For example, if you have a nokia 6220c, you would just download the app and have it working without the need for a fancy GPS? And without the need to connect to the internet?

Also search and use GarminUnlocker.exe.

There seems to be a new version out! V5.5
