  • New smoking rules not well received

Plans by the government to further restrict smoking in public places has some business owners crying foul and threatening legal action.

"This regulation must be rejected because it is not possible to implement... ," said Township Liquor Traders Association secretary Patric Poggenpoel.

He said his organisation had not been consulted on the rule making and asked the department of health to reconsider it.

He said if the new rule went ahead some business owners and organisations would likely challenge it in court.

The new rules would prohibit people from smoking in any public place, including restaurants bars and shebeens.

It also prevents them from smoking within 10 metres of a window to a public place.

It's a logical, your 14% would be taken off something else you'd spend your money on, so the sin tax is the only thing that applies. Do you really think the small amount you pay per pack really out weighs the R100 000s your medical bill will cost?

ROFL since when will government pay for the medical bills? There is no mention of a trust fund being created out of sin tax to solemnly go for the good of smokers, my God you fall for propaganda.

When did I say the sin tax went to hospitals? The comparision was that the amount of money the sin tax generates does not contribute to the system more than the hospital bills take from the system. Smoking BURDENS the system more than it CONRIBUTES (or in SA, is stolen by Zuma).

Better way to think of it:
Can that R100 000 bill spend on chemo be spent elsewhere better? Yes.

lol and you believe that government knows best where government should spend that money? The money going to nicotine contributes to job creation, the money going to medical bills contribute to medical research all in all we might one day have way to smoke and also cure it instantaneously!

I'm sure you know that prevention is better than cure.

Lol, you think medical bills fund research? That's cute.

In most cases medical aid pays for it, so medical aids have to raise the prices, so you are costing alot of people alot more.

Who pays those bills when someone who can't afford it/not coverd is rushed into emergancy?

Have stoke, use an entire emergancy team's time and focus... time that could have been spent helping someone else.

Heres a better solution, every single smoker, take your monthly fix budget and send it to CANSA, then you'll be contributing more than your silly justification that sin tax "helps".

Apply whatever you said to those who are obese as well. As with any insurance scheme, those at a higher risk pay a higher premium. You're not paying more than you would have otherwise.

It's amazing the justifications the addicts have for their addictions.

Yes you can, but there arent any laws for that (yet...) and we're talking about smoking particularly here.

Law no. 1 of smoking: Never argue with a smoker that it's bad for them coz they don't get the reasoning

My medical aid never enquired as to if myself or my missus were smokers when we enrolled, or subsequently.

Is it just me or do all the non-smokers who go on about us smokers making them pay more for medical aid and that doctors and nurses waste their times on us sound very very unjust? You are implying that you, as a non-smoker, is a better person and should be treated better than those of us who smoke? Seriously? Screw equality then eh... This thread makes me sad. I am no longer going to take part in this argument as it has become a smoker bashing thread.

I do think that smokers add unnessary burden to healthcare and that money could be spend better - but that doesnt take away your entitlement (horrible word) to healthcare.

Yes I understood what you said. I just wonder at this whole equality thing. Obviously some non-smokers see themselves above the smokers. And that is stupid. In any case, happy arguing
