  • The state lost R300 million through fraud and other financial misconduct

The state lost R300 million through fraud and other financial misconduct by civil servants in the 2009/10 financial year, Public Service and Administration Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said on Monday.

In national departments, R260 million that could not be recovered was lost and in the provinces, the figure came to R40 million, she said in a written reply to a parliamentary question.

Local government employees refunded the state some R4 million but in national departments the culprits paid back only R325,171, Sisulu said.

According to figures from the Public Service Commission cited by the minister, a total of 1135 financial misconduct cases were reported at national and local government level in 2009/2010.

Employees were found guilty in 998 cases. Of those, 214 were dismissed 498 were issued with final written warnings, and the rest with smaller sanctions.

      So sad...

And now we know why it is so prevalent. Fewer than 1000 cases across the entire country resulted in guilty verdicts. Of those, fewer than a quarter were dismissed. How fscking ridiculous is that? More than just that, how many of these resulted in criminal prosecution?

The way this sort of thing is handled is a complete joke...

This is an easy one to solve , simply subtract 300 mill from the public service wage negotiations. Make everyone understand that when some people steal everyone suffers. Then sit back and watch some people mysteriously "dissapear".

      And

Audit chief Auditor-General Terence Nombembe says R11bn misspent by councils:

LOCAL governments do not have to fear facing consequences from inaction in cleaning up their finances, Auditor-General Terence Nombembe said yesterday, as he announced that only 5% of municipalities had clean audits.

The biggest contributors to irregular spending were KwaZulu-Natal with R2,1bn and the Eastern Cape with R1,4bn.

It was most prevalent in the Northern Cape at 90% of councils, the Free State (89%) and Limpopo (83%).

Mm, article says R300 million, Thread heading says R3 Billion. Slight difference. Either way, a guy that's been dead for almost 50 years is obviously to blame.
