  • I would have fired Education Minister: FW De Klerk

Former president FW de Klerk said he would have fired Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga if he had found wrongdoing on her part in the Limpopo textbook saga.

"If I was president, I would have asked the minister of education to fully investigate and brief me," he told reporters in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

"And if I had come to a conclusion that the minister of education... failed in a material way, yes, I would have fired her."

De Klerk said if there were people in her department which she felt were the guilty parties, then they must be brought to account.

"The delivery of textbooks is purely a management issue. Children need textbooks.

"The textbooks were printed... but not delivered. That is tremendously bad management," said De Klerk.

De Klerk was speaking after a conference hosted by his foundation.

The event discussed the outcomes of the recent ANC policy conference and their future impact.

A minister's job is to engrain him or herself as quickly as possible into the whole system.

It may be a political position but she is not just a figure head.

      He is old.

That being said ... there is no white person at this moment in South Africa that I would be happy with being the president.

It's basically like my time at Stellenbosch during the late 90s. We had a bunch of low caliber people on the Student Council simply because the higher caliber people (those people that were eventually successful in the business world) didn't want to get their hands and careers dirty with the political squabbling that is taking place everywhere.

It's a bit easy for him to say what he does from the outside. A lot of people can say they would have done things he didn't do while president because of political expediency. Zuma is doing the same, firing the president of the women's league who supported him even with his misogyny can't be easy.

wayne, you are becoming rather cynical these days where politics are concerned. I don't know you for being like the oink brigade.

I think he is part of the "gatvol" brigade R13. Just because someone is unhappy with the complete lack of leadership from zumatello doesn't make them part of any 'group".

R13..., I am ashamed to admit I don't know what oink brigade means.

I am trying to put to words what I feel I have become because I see lots of people have gone the same route as me now. When I came on here I had my say on certain things and spent most of my days talking *** in off topic and lots of newbies came on and joined us and so we built up a friendship and then these people become "serious" and headed off to PD and CA and spoke their minds and hardly ever came back to off topic just to shoot the breeze. Their whole persona changed and things were different and I feel like I have gone the same route because I am gatvol on how this country has changed and in my eyes not for the good of everyone.

      You are not alone.

Fired at - more like. And in the face.

So we get the wrong books for blind folk - maybe that was a genuine mistake. But those schools that don't have books will now not get them because there is no money. How about using that deposit that we paid for the Boeings? R10M will buy an awful lot of books.

Unless I am forgetting the ANC cadre 90% skim.

      Helen Zille doesn't agree...

But Zille defended the embattled minister, while agreeing that EduSolutions should be probed.
Zille said the crisis had taken many years to develop and that without Motshekga, “things would probably go from bad to worse”.

“Firing the minister would treat a superficial symptom, but leave the root causes unaddressed,” said Zille, a former Western Cape education MEC.

Well now it turns out that Angie knew there was going to be a problem with the textbooks a year ago already.

      Yep.

A leaked report by the Limpopo education department reveals that Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga knew in 2011 that textbook funds were insufficient.

Does anyone know what the motivation was behind the dumping in the lake of textbooks ?
