Racist tweet strikes again at Olympics

Switzerland footballer Michel Morganella has been sent home from the Olympics after posting a racist message on Twitter, team officials confirmed on Monday.

Morganella had directed an offensive Tweet at South Korea's players after Switzerland's 2-1 defeat to the Asian giants on Sunday.

Morganella "discriminated against, insulted and violated the dignity'' of the South Korean team, as well as the nation's citizens, Swiss committee chief Gian Gilli said Monday in a statement at a news conference.

Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has backed the decision to kick Switzerland footballer Michel Morganella out of the Olympics after he racially abused South Korea's players on Twitter.

Morganella was sent home in disgrace after directing an offensive jibe at South Korea's players following Switzerland's 2-1 defeat to the Asian team on Sunday.

In a post on Twitter that was later deleted, Morganella wrote: "I am going to batter the Koreans, burn them all... bunch of 'trisos'."

'Trisos' is a French slang word for people born with Down's Syndrome.

Williams, speaking after winning in both the Olympics singles and doubles at Wimbledon on Monday, said Swiss Olympic officials were correct to punish Morganella severely because it's vital to show racism will not be tolerated.

"I think it's honourable if they had to kick someone out because of that, then they realise there's no colour bounds," Serena said.

"It's definitely not a bad thing. This is an event that is for all races and all countries around the world. This is just purely for sport."

Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou was also kicked out of the Olympics last week for a racist comment on the micro-blogging site which poked fun at Africans living in the country.

And 14-time Grand Slam winner Serena, an avid user of Twitter herself, admitted she has been extra-careful with what she writes on the site since then.

"I heard about the Greece one, so I've been really careful about saying things in social media. I haven't been on my account too much," she said.

"I would be devastated if I got kicked out of the Olympics."

I don't understand why some focus their racism on South Koreans. I think they are of the last people deserved of prejudice.

I must have missed the memo where countries are also considered races.

I wonder if those who get paid per word are genuinely surprised when vacuous models or intellectually-unencumbered athletes do their twit.brainfarts from the dizzying heights of the pedestals the admiring public place them on?
The only thing that ever seems to change is the increasing variety of technological enablers allowing people to exhibit their petty prejudices in unguarded moments like these, but don't for one moment think that the other team hangs around in the change-room referring to their round-eye opponents as "jolly good sporting chaps".

Muscle power and sporting skill does not equate to intellectual ability. The team unfortunately have to be treated like schoolboys and told how to behave when they are guests in a foreign country.

You are basically saying its an insult to be likened to someone with Downs Syndrome. I know some Downs Syndrome kids.

I find it insulting that someone would feel insulted because they are likened to someone with Downs Syndrome. Makes me sick.
