  • Racist tweet strikes again at Olympics

Switzerland footballer Michel Morganella has been sent home from the Olympics after posting a racist message on Twitter, team officials confirmed on Monday.

Morganella had directed an offensive Tweet at South Korea's players after Switzerland's 2-1 defeat to the Asian giants on Sunday.

"Michel Morganella has discriminated against, insulted and violated the dignity of the South Korean football team, as well as the South Korean people," said Switzerland Olympic team chef de mission Gian Gilli.

"While the committee felt that Michel had been provoked on his Twitter account and that he has publicly apologised, the Swiss Olympic Committee and Swiss Football Association condemn Morganella's actions to the fullest."

I would put them together yes, but they are slightly different.
Xenophobia is defined as an intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries - it doesn't make any reference to feelings of superiority as racism does.
Xenophobia may or may not be racist as one may not think a particular group is inferior (which would be racist), but you may feel threatened or afraid or just not like them - that would be xenophobia. Racism is particularly about being derogatory, as in you feel superior, or consider yourself superior to them.

Is it even important to make a distinction between racism and xenophobia?

One is a noun, the other is an adjective. But other than that no, they're both different levels of irrational hatred.

I think they can take it, considering Koreans are largely racialistic in their outlooks.. and they probably should be, the results speak for themselves.

joelus is just trying to turn everyone into victims again, because that's how he sees himself, and he doesn't want to be alone.
a victim mentality is a self fullfilling prophecy.

a victim of what exactly? Who am I turning into a victim? Your post makes no sense. I'm the last person to think of myself as a victim as I'm one of the privileged minority in this country (a white male with a good job, a good education and good future prospects).

Anyway, this isn't about me, it's about whether calling all the people of a particular nation retards is racist or not...

      Which one is the adjective?

I can't think of a situation in which either xenophobia or racism could be used as adjectives.

I actually had that in the UK a few years ago, these English guys were playing 'Magic' the card game - they had been really weird to me anyway but I asked if I could join the game and was told, no, it's too complicated, you south africans wouldn't be able to understand it (used those words)! The term racist has come to have a much broader meaning than it originally had. Like all words, meanings evolve.
The cANCer does that to the entire group of South Africans every day - So the cANCer is racist.

Oh cool, so racism has got nothing to do with race. Excuse me while I go be racist to the group of dumb people sitting in the corner of our office.

noone said it has nothing to do with race - racism is usually based on race, sometimes not pedantic so. Race itself is difficult to define, and it's not always easy to determine what race an individual belongs to. This is why the term racism is broader than only race. What race are Koreans? Does the fact that he specified South Koreans make his comments any less racist than if he had just said Koreans?

ok so the chinese, japanese, koreans etc all have the down's syndrome look. i should know having had a down's child myself and being privileged with a down's child. people with the slanted eyes look will be compared to the down's syndrome. i don't think they will be classified as mentally challenged but they will definitely be looked at with that comparison.

If he was referring to the team that just kicked his ass, then maybe.

If we go with what you say (and we are because if someone sneezes in the direction of someone else he is accused of being racist) then you'll agree with me that the world has ruined the word "racist" just like teenagers have ruined the word "love". It's lost its true meaning.

Lol at the people saying "What's wrong with the down syndrome look"... I'd be pretty damn offended if someone told me it looks like I have down syndrome.

Yes, just like an cheesecake doesn't contain any cheese, and a boxing ring is actually square. English is full of these sorts of words.

As long as you make reference to their race, colour, or nationality, then yes, you'll be racist towards them.
      ...

They did the right thing by sending Morganella home. Someone spouting idiotic hate speech on Twitter does not deserve the honour of participating in the Olympic Games.
