  • Chad le Clos scoops SA's second Olympic gold medal

South African swimming sensation Chad le Clos scooped the country's second gold medal of the London Olympic Games, edging American legend Michael Phelps in the men's 200 metres butterfly final on Tuesday evening.

Le Clos, 20, chased down Phelps in the last 50 metres, touching the wall in one minute, 52.96 seconds (1:52.96) to smash his own national record by well over a second.

Phelps, the defending champion, finished second in 1:53.01.

Le Clos's medal added to the gold won by Cameron van der Burgh in the men's 100m breaststroke final on Sunday.

An hour later Le Clos was back in the water, swimming the third leg of the men's 4x200m freestyle relay final.

The SA quartet, consisting of Darian Townsend, Sebastien Rousseau, Le Clos and Jean Basson, got off to a super start, with Townsend going out hard on the first leg.

They faded, however, with Rousseau dropping back on the second leg, and they were unable to close the gap, clocking seven minutes, 09.65 seconds (7:09.65) for seventh place.

The United States won in 6:59.70, with Phelps bagging his 15th Olympic gold medal.

And they were something like 1 second off the WR too. Their Semi's time was 1:54 so this was a good improvement!

I am very excited to watch these two. Think we will medal with them. Cant wait to see Caster run. Also very excited to see Oscar run...not because I think he will medal...but just because I think it will be a beautiful moment.

Cant say I am familiar with van Zyl.

The 16-year-old swimmer has won two gold medals at the London Olympics -- the individual medley at 200 and 400 meters -- and has denied any use of banned drugs.
She was so fast in the last 50 meters of the 400 medley that her time was quicker than that of men's gold medalist Ryan Lochte over the same leg. U.S. coach John Leonard was quoted in British media as saying Ye's performances were "unbelievable" and "disturbing."

I find it all really hard to believe.

Wrt the doping thing they are now saving samples for 8yrs or something so if new testing methods come along they will pull the archived samples and test again.

Seems incredibly fishy that she could somehow, all of a sudden, shave 5 seconds off her PB...
