  • Christo Wiese owes the SA Revenue Service (Sars) R2 billion: report

Businessman Christo Wiese owes the SA Revenue Service (Sars) R2 billion, the Sunday Times reported.

The amount apparently included a R1 billion tax bill and various penalties. Wiese was contesting the bill, levied on his main trading company, Titan, in tax court.

Wiese, 71, chairman of Shoprite and Pepkor, however disputed the report.

"Do you think that for 50 years Sars has not been aware of my existence? I'm not hiding anywhere, so if you think I owe you money, send me the bill," the newspaper quoted him saying.

Sars spokesman Adrian Lackay would not comment on the matter.

Pfft!! Poor people.. What do they know..

I think he has it though, sinse he is contesting it. Or he will just arrange to pay it off. If he has the money for lawyers to add to the bill he probably has the money.

Tough to do as he will run up a hefty VAT payment bill to SARS.

Given his run in with UK Customs with GBP600k in his suitcase, I doubt very much he is the type to let Accountants run loose unsupervised.

My guess is that perhaps his tax avoidance schemes were quite not that effective. Note I said, avoidance and not evasion...

I am disappointed in SARS in this aspect of collecting outstanding money from either high income or hi profile people. I thought they were getting their act together but they still dropping the balls when it suits them. eg Christo Wiese, Malema

Are these also going to die off with unknown settlements and letting others get away with what Joe public would never.

what are you talking about? "letting others get away with it"? no one is getting away with anything. you don't know what SARS is doing, neither will you ever know. SARS will never ever let the public know what goes on behind closed doors they have an oath to uphold. as can be seen by the article, the SARS official has refused to comment, meaning he is not allowed to comment. this money will be collected come hell or high water.

There are many examples of where they do not collect !

For example, the bribes money on the arms deal - only the tip of the iceberg !

the only time sars don't collect is when they lose a tax case or they do not know about a person/entity that should be paying tax.

it may be the case that the assessment is revised lower than 2bio, but if it the outcome is in their favour be assured they will collect.

I am wondering who in SARS is leaking this information to the press. So much for the oath of secrecy.

why does he owe them it though? Who is entitled to legally steal his money?

SARS tries!! I am sure he will end up paying that, or at least a sizable chunk of it.

SARS also has a nasty habit of focusing on the poor sods like us - we earn a pittance and then they decide to audit us for the 2009 year? Why? Rather focus on the big fish!!!

Agreed, if there is a "oath" then it is typical of a office under the ruling party.

Still why should it be kept hush, after all it does affect all of us and if not paid we will cough up.
