  • Criminals' cars to be auctioned

The Bloemfontein High Court granted permission to the NPA on Thursday to auction three cars used in dagga trafficking.

National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesman Phaladi Shuping said the cars belonged to a former police officer, Constable Abel Pakalitha, and Pitso Mpholo.

"[Pakalitha], who was employed by the SAPS and based at Botshabelo police station, imported dagga directly from Lesotho and sold it to the public," Shuping said in a statement.

He used his Toyota Corolla and a Nissan Sentra to do so. The officer was also found guilty of ferrying dagga dealers across the Free State.

"He was assisted by his friend Mpholo [who also owned a Toyota Corolla] in escorting dagga dealers across the Free State. Pakalitha was wearing a full police uniform when he escorted drug dealers."

The proceeds from the auction would be put into the criminal assets recovery account, to be used in the fight against crime.

Both Pakalitha and Mpholo were found guilty of dealing in dagga and given suspended sentences.

How long before the new car is taken back, and the new owner shot? I say 1 month.

Only 3 cars! There should be hundreds. What about the thousands of cars standing for years at the SAPS pound in Stikland, Cape Town and in other cities. Went with my neighbour to collect his thrice stolen Camry and the cop said some of the cars had been there 20 years. Saw a 1965 Austin Westminster that had 8000 miles on the clock. Bit of a gas guzzler but a collectors piece.

In London, the Metropolitan Police have auctions about every 18 months, mainly large lorries. Friend got a Mazda MX-5 for £800, hardly used and just needed a new battery.
