  • Without Ubuntu, we risk hooliganism: Zuma

Without respect and ubuntu, members of society become hooligans, President Jacob Zuma said in Alexandra on Saturday.

"We believe that all human beings are equal and important...that they must be respected by virtue of their humanity.

"Once we lose respect for one another and ubuntu, what type of society will we be?

"If we build a society without these two, we are building a society of hooligans," he told the Alexandra township centenary celebration.

Zuma criticised those who spoke recklessly against others just because they did not share the same views.

"If we do not agree as people, let us argue with respect and not by violence, saying whatever we like to people.

"That does not build a nation. South Africans are not hooligans. We are a nation of very proud respectful people who stand up for their rights but do so without losing dignity and ubuntu," Zuma said.

He urged the community of Alexandra not to join the violent service delivery protests which engulfed some parts of the country.

The violent protests, Zuma said, reversed what had already been achieved through the struggle and by the democratic government.

"We must never allow anger to reverse the gains we have made through decades of struggle. The new violent protests...have no place in a democratic society. We cannot destroy that which we have built ourselves."

He commended the Alexandra township which was associated with great leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Moses Kotane and Joe Modise.

Other icons associated with the township included Orlando Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza, the late Simon "Mahlathini" Nkabinde, Ntemi Piliso, Mahotella Queens and the Dark City Sisters.

Zuma applauded progress made by the Alexandra Renewal Project which was launched 10 years ago to rebuild the township and remove the legacy of its past.

The project started with a budget of R1.3 billion and last year this was increased to R2.2 billion.

Zuma earlier met Alexandra community leaders who submitted complaints over the issuing of title deeds in the area.

He committed himself to return to the township in October but urged the residents to celebrate what the township had achieved thus far.

Zuma urged workers not to follow the path taken by striking Lonmin workers in Marikana when they refused to use recognised trade unions and caused negotiation process to be stalled.

"Let Alexandra be a mother, teaching people how they can solve their own problems."

The celebrations at a packed Alexandra stadium, were marked with poetry, dance and music.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau were among the dignitaries in attendance.

No without law and order and enforcement of that, we get hooliganism. Ubuntu has nothing to do with it, backing down from violence instead of stepping on it does.

Probably the kind of society we are.

Respect does not come automatically. It must be led from the top. That is where the failure is. His speech is disengenuous.

      Zuma you daft prat...

Ubuntu has fek all to do with stopping hooliganism, the enforcement of law and order does. Get your bloody act together and start leading from the top, and if you can't then trundle off to jail where you belong so that someone else can try and do the job properly.

Again, a leader without an original thought in his head. Just rattles off whatever is printed on the paper in front of him. I am sure that within 15 mins of giving that speech, he would remember little of it.

      Defining Ubuntu: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28philosophy%29

Unfortunately urbanisation, normal progression of a modern society and the culture of freebies, has all but destroyed this idea.
It has become out of date, invalid and is barely practised.

It is no longer safe to invite a stranger, or passer-by or person in need into your home to offer ubuntu, the risk of theft, rape and murder is too high.

We no longer offer people lifts/transport due to the same safety concerns.

South African society is rotten from the top down.

President Zuma and too many of the parliamentary members are corrupt, inept and self-enriching.

President Zuma, you and your cronies have killed ubuntu - now resign please, South Africa has had enough of your stupidity and inability to lead this country.

The corruptocracy no longer instils the same amount of respect and patriotism in the hoi polloi. Most of the ordinary people's starting to become increasingly fed up with the corruptocracy, and such nonsensical speeches does not help a lot.

Zuma should start by genuinely doing something about corruption etc, not just waffle and prattle on and on about it.

I beg to differ - I offer lifts to complete strangers that look like they need to be somewhere. I am not scared, and maybe one day it will bite me on the arse, but I remember what it feels like to be the penniless schmuck on the side of the road. I remember people of all colours picking me up, offering me food, lodging when required, and just plain human compassion.

I think most South Africans are decent people, and while we may have a lot of crime, it isn't too difficult to understand why the poor react they way they do when all they get is the shaft - education and employment are failing them.

Ubuntu is something we should strive for, it is a noble idea. Zuma might not be the best person to be advocating that, but it's still a concept worth fighting for.

Good for you and your efforts and I admire your courageous attitude and your intentions and actions are indeed noble, but please understand that I (and many others) have experienced the short end of the stick regarding being charitable. I am a female and I have been assaulted and worse (SA has highest rape rate in world) for my efforts of ubuntu and thus I can no longer take part in some forms of social risk.

I do my ubuntu where I can and when it is safe to do so for me, by respecting people, greeting everyone friendly, giving away copious amounts of clothing and high quality household items to those who ring my bell.

Yes we should strive for ubuntu and I wish we lived in a country that was less dangerous, so that it could be easier.

Ubuntu was very widespread in South Africa before the arrival of the whites.
It played a significant part in population control and was called mfecane.
