Village Telco is an initiative to build low-cost community telephone network hardware and software. It is based on a suite of open source applications that enable entrepreneurs to set up and operate a telephone service in a specific area or supporting the needs of a specific community.

The first Village Telco network was established by Dabba at Orange Farm, a township near Johannesburg, South Africa. Users can make free local calls to other Dabba subscribers, as well as use pay-as-you-go vouchers to make calls to 'phones on other networks.

Technically, a Village Telco system consists of:

a mesh network made up of Wi-Fi mini-routers combined with an analogue telephone adaptor (aka 'Mesh Potato')

SIP phones

a pay-as-you-go billing and management system

a SIP/VOIP server

least cost routing equipment

These components together comprise an easy-to-use, standards-based, wireless, local, do-it-yourself, telephone company toolkit. The goal of bringing these together is to make local telephony in developing countries to be so cheap as to be virtually free. This has become possible thanks to advances in open source telephony software and the dramatic decrease in the cost of wireless broadband technology.

My internet keeps disconnecting at night, anytime from 18:00 - 00:00. During the day the internet is fine. Now this is unbelievably irritating. I have phoned MWEB and they told me that my line speed is 2Mb and they only give me 1Mb and this might be causing the intermittent connection. They suggested that I should call Telkom and put me back on the 1Mb line speed. I did this and also did a port reset. But the next night the problem was still there.

I play World of Warcraft online and whenever I am with a big group of friends the connection drops for a few times (3-5 times) then it is fine again. Some nights it happens even more and I cant do anything.

When this happens I go check the Router and all the lights are green and the DSL light is flickering green and the Internet light is off or it is solid red.

Can anyone help me with this problem or suggest what steps I should take!! Please help.

went and bought a voucher, should of bought a smaller voucher, so be it!!
wen I uploaded the money, great, go free data and and and , though wow this is great!!

then it all went bad!!
data connection at home, edge only, after having been told that I should have full coverage
at work a very week 3G
so though will just use us the money making phone calls
that is no good either!! breaks up and general bad signal in general, almost every where we go!!

though might be the cell phone, as I was using a older hand set, so inserted a sim card from a different/usual network, and no more reception issues!!

thought that cell C had sorted out their coverage and reception issues
obviously not!!

it does not help cellC has this big advertising campaign about the call rates, if the thing dosent work in the 1st place!!
PetroSA has suspended a top executive implicated in the R1-billion scandal that is rocking the parastatal.

Everton September, a vice-president in charge of the company’s new oil and gas ventures, was suspended on Tuesday, the Mail & Guardian has confirmed.

September faces questions over his role in PetroSA’s 2012 acquisition of a company with oil acreage offshore of Ghana, where he and former acting chief executive Yekani Tenza allegedly negotiated the price “in reverse” – costing South Africans R162-million extra.

Last month, the M&G exposed questions around this and PetroSA’s ongoing effort to buy out oil company Engen. Allegedly the company overpaid or needlessly risked about R1-billion on the deals.

PetroSA’s chairperson Benny Mokaba resigned on the back of the exposé, after apparently being told to go. And the company then cancelled its R187-million contract with a consultant firm that had been implicated.

The M&G also revealed evidence that kickbacks might have been paid in the Ghana deal.

The Hawks police unit is investigating PetroSA, and a probe by the Central Energy Fund, its holding company, is said to be complete.

Represented value for money

The parastatal and Tenza have defended the extra R162-million he and September agreed to pay for the Ghana acquisition, saying it still represented value for money.

The oil company has admitted to “some deviations from our normal procurement processes”.

On Thursday, PetroSA confirmed September’s suspension: “At its meeting on Tuesday, the PetroSA board resolved to suspend September as a precautionary measure. This is to allow an investigation to take place into various allegations. The suspension is intended to enable the investigation to take place without any possible perception of undue interference.”

September could not be reached for comment.
