SA researcher develops vertical axis wind turbine configuration

Vaal University of Technology head of the Innovation Centre Jan Jooste has developed a new configuration of the vertical axis wind turbine, which he stated could realise a shift in wind energy generation from horizontal axis wind turbines, as well as significantly lower wind energy generation costs.

Still in the testing phase, Jooste’s configuration of the vertical axis wind turbine consists of three blades over three levels, as opposed to the single layer used in a conventional vertical turbine.

Following wind tunnel testing results, Jooste added that the new configuration increases energy yield by 400%. This, he said, was because the two additional layers increase the area of energy capture by 200%, and, as the energy yield correlates with the area – the energy yield will similarly increase by a further 200%.

“Initial results, as well as theory, support a 400% improvement in energy harvesting, relative to the conventional configuration of vertical axis wind turbines,” said Jooste.

He said that a further benefit of the new configuration was that blades were now continuously spinning through fresh wind with higher energy levels. “In conventional vertical axis wind turbines, the blades spin through fresh wind in the upwind half of their rotation – but pass through reduced energy wind in the downwind half of the rotation. The impact of this improved downwind half, seems to be an overall increase of about 200% in energy yield.”

He explained that this could realize a shift from the more popular horizontal axis wind turbines, towards vertical axis wind turbines. “This shift would also be supported by the fact that vertical turbine blades are much easier to manufacture than horizontal axis blades, and blade manufacture could also be automated,” Jooste noted.

He highlighted that a further change could occur in the entire energy generation industry.

“It would upset the approximate parity in generation costs per unit of energy, between wind and coal. About 70% of the generation cost for wind energy serves to recover capital cost. If capital cost could now be reduced by 60%, the generation cost per unit of energy would drop by 42%, which would make alternative generation the rational choice, even in the absence of subsidies,” Jooste reiterated. http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/art...ion-2009-07-31

At the moment I am forced to use 3G to access the web from home.
Apart from being screwed when i took out the contract for the first 3 months because the retard at the Vodacom shop who helped me, or should i say didnt help me!!!!! failed to mention that the My data advanced packages, although slightly more expensive as a per GB comparison with the standard packages cost the same in bundle as they do out of bundle.
There for you cannot be billed @ R1.20/mb on a My Data Advanced, but can on My Data standard.....................retards.

:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: :confused::confused:

Summary of issues over the last 3 - 4 weeks.

Prior to November although not the greatest thing since sliced bread, i was able to use the ZTE K3565-Z 3G usb vodaphone live device as an alternative to my ADSL line which suffered from Coppersolenitis.
With an online ping of between 100ms and 150ms and stable at that speed.
I could also browse the internet with it, recieve mail, skype yada yada yada.

Since the start of November though I have been subjected to a never ending onslaught of complete BULLSh#t.

1. Plug in device, open stupid Vodaphone Connect software - and it sits searching for Network until it dies of old age.
2. Pull USB out, insert it again, It finds the network finally, you hit connect - Cannot Connect, please make sure the device is not being used by another application.
3. Finally connects on 3G HSDPA with the light blue light, after 5 mins it goes dark blue and you can use it for nothing else but a cool night light if you turn all the lights off because it cannot send or recieve anything
4. You manage to connect this time using *99# and using the ZTE Modem rather than Vodaphone Connect - which sucks anyway. However this time when you connect it responds for more than 5 mins, however after 5 mins it is very sluggish and cant find certian web sites. You do an NSlookup, and it cannot connect to the Vodacom DNS Servers.
You then manually enter alternate DNS server and have to disconnect reconnect, however now you need to repeat points 1 and 2 using the Modem option and not in the Vodaphone Connect app.
5. You connect and start trouble shooting. you open Command prompt and
Ping -t various addresses. The results of which look like this.

Pinging www.mweb.co.za [196.2.63.110] with 32 bytes of data:

If you are lucky enought to get the normal speed and latency reply, you then start using it as normal.
However it will not run without issue for more than an hour or so.
Then you will see massive latency, or simply be unable to send or receive data over the connection and have to disconnect / reconnect to try again.

WTF is going on and WTF sort of useless service is this.
3G is such a horrifying and useless experience it should be a free service, not one of the most costly and expensive services in South Africa.

The pathetic nature of the Vodacom network is in fact so bad that i dont even use their DNS servers because 9 times out of 10, the reason i get no data down my lines is because i cant lookup on the Vodacom DNS servers.
Pathetic.

Does anyone else have these issues, and if so what recourse do we have for either pay compensation or legal right out of the contract for an undelivered or unprofessional service.
