Take note if you make use of IOS hotspots...

Researchers at the University of Erlangen in Germany managed to crack the automatically generated pre-shared keys used in Apple’s iOS hotspots in under a minute through a flaw in the way the passwords are generated by iOS.

The passwords are generated by taking a short 4-6 letter long dictionary word from a list of around 52 500 words (which originated from an open-source Scrabble crossword game) and followed by a series of 4 randomly generated numbers; a process that can only yield around 18 million possible combinations. Upon further investigation the researchers found that only 1842 of the words from the initial list were ever used and to add even more gloom to the equation certain words were used with far more regularity than others.

With the power of 4 AMD Radeon HD7970s GPUs the researchers could crack the passwords in around 50 seconds with a 100% success rate. Once the connection is established the attacker can either use your data connection for themselves or potentially use it as a springboard to further attack your device.

Hi Guys

So I have a HP Microserver connected to a router which is connected to the net. I want to RDP into this server over the internet.

I have LAN Remote Desktop working (RDP), however I want to access this server RDP over the internet.

I thought I have to do the following:
- Set up VPN server on the server
- Set up Dynamic DNS
- Once I have set up VPN, I can connect to VPN on client computer, and then RDP into the server.

Is the above incorrect?

I have managed to successfully set up the VPN server and connect to it using the dynamic DNS, but once I'm connected I can't seem to RDP into the server. This works on LAN however.

The IP of the server is 192.168.1.5, and from what I saw, the IP it assigns the VPN connection is 192.168.1.30.

Would appreciate any assistance. Want to avoid the LogMeIn/Hamachi route if possible.

Thanks!

P.S. I read it's not recommended to expose your server straight to the internet like that, hence the reason I wanted to go VPN? Is it not possible using the above method? I know I can forward port 3389 and it all works great, but surely this isn't ideal for security?

Is the VPN method above safer? Or only if it's SSL VPN? Sorry quite noob at this..

Hi,

I am staying with family at the moment, and the current networking setup is the following:

*Area 1: Study*

* Telephone Line + Telephone
* ADSL Filter
* Netgear N600 ADSL Router
* Desktop Computer

Hi,

I am staying with family at the moment, and the current networking setup is the following:

Area 1: Study

Telephone Line + Telephone

ADSL Filter

Netgear N600 ADSL Router

Desktop Computer

Area 2: Entertainment Area

Samsung 46" Smart TV

There is another termination point for the telephone line about halfway between area 1 and 2. (The house is L-shaped)

There are a number of WiFi devices connected (ie. 2 - 10 at a given time)
The WiFI signal is not great in the Entertainment Area, specifically for Smartphones/Tablets (the SmartTV cannot connect at all). Last time I was here, I ran a LAN cable from the Study to the Entertainment area so that the SmartTV could access the internet.

I have a Cisco (Linksys) WAG120N Wireless ADSL Router here that is currently being used, and would like to connect this up in the entertainment area to act as an access point or network extender for Cellphones, Tablets, Laptops etc. in the area to connect to.

I was thinking of connecting this router to the ethernet cable currently connected to the TV, and then plugging another cable from there into the TV (if there is space in the wall conduit to keep it looking neat).

Do these devices allow for this functionality? Or maybe only one of them. How do I go about setting this up, I am happy to swap the devices, ie. Cisco connected to telephone line and Netgear in the entertainment area (although the Netgear is massive so rather not if possible).

Right.

So after I opened the ports I saved the config and restarted the router. Then to test I used my wife's tablet, turned off the wifi, and connected via 3g (believe me I made 100% sure I'm not connecting via wifi - I know someone will ask this :p ).

I could connect to all 3 servers with no issue at all.

I'm trying to connect now and I can still only connect to 8081 :(. For the other two ports, the proxy server here in the office is returning

Any other ideas?
