I know that the Gautrain shuts at 20.30 and as I'm spending so little time in Joburg, I think it would make sense to stay in Kempton Park that night? Does this sounds wise? I have to fly home from Jozi, so I'll spend a few days in the city in September.

Nail the trolls

So freedom of speech yes, but does it add value if people just troll and bring nothing to the discussion? In the end the people with a valuable opinion just stay away because of the trolls and the whole thread (apart from the original post where e.g. a good question is asked) is of no use.
Trolls...

Trolls then come and say 'what Peter sees as trolling is not trolling to John', well ok have a vote then.
Imagine Google not adding weight to the contents of a page, and that a page full of trolling had the same weight as a page with actual useful results?

It's all good and well now, there aren't any really big/good forums apart from myBB in SA, but that doesn't mean the quality should drop down to next to nothing.

Nail the trolls - always very clever with their Captain Hindsight cap on but never really able to add to the discussion.

I often see threads containing whole articles copied and pasted from other websites, with merely a link to the original article at the end of the article.

I feel it is wrong to do this because one is using the article from the other website without generating the traffic, with its related benefits such as advertising revenue, to the other website.

I'm sure the owners of MyBroadband would not take kindly to their articles being copied and pasted on other websites with merely a link to the original article.

I think there should be a forum policy that one may not copy and paste whole articles from other websites, except in cases where the other website specifically allows it, for example as happens with Wikipedia.

I looked at http://itjobs.mybroadband.co.za this week and it is full of the same copied and pasted jobs by recruiters that they paste it on all jobs sites they can. This was not the case in 2009 when I used the job site before. I don't have a problem of recruiters posting jobs but there should be a limit on them and not unlimited which is open to abuse which SA IT recruiters are renown for with their generic ads for CV mining
Any normal companies pasting jobs or non generic developer jobs will get lost in the recruiter noise.

I would like to make use of itjobs but to have it spammed like it makes it just a poor copy and paste version off the exact same jobs that post to pnet, careerjunction and the tens of other jobs sites.
Some of the big culprits are:
Studio 29 – Posted by Studio 29 (Posted 22 job ads on Monday 22 April )
1st AIIM Recruiting – Posted by Marina (posted 14 ads on Monday 22 April)

Hi folks

There have been complaints about the MyBroadband forum and enforcing the forum rules. It will be great if you can share your views on the following:

Are you unhappy about anything on the MyBroadband forums? If so, please give details.

In which of the forums do you think most of the problems happed? Do you think different forums should be moderated slightly differently (like Off Topic and Threadkiller, for example).

What do you think can be done to rectify the problems? Do you think new, clearer forum rules are needed?

What else do you think can be done to make MyBroadband’s forum better? This relates to anything else, like design, themes, apps and the like.

Please try to stick to the questions as it will make it easier for us to record your feedback.

Follow up post with more clarity

Thanks for the all the feedback. We are currently discussing the best way forward, which may include quite a few changes.

Personal opinion: I think there are ways on which we can improve MyBroadband (there always are), and I am trying hard to find those ways (with the help of the mods and members). It is very challenging to keep everyone happy (I would say impossible, but that has not been proven ), but we definitely work very hard to run MyBroadband as well as we can.

Another note: Every time a senior member is banned (or whenever else they get a chance) the same guys climb in and slate us, trying their best to put us in the worst light possible (it can obviously be hurtful as it is nearly always completely untrue, but we accept it as being part of running a forum). The fiercest critics (nearly) always claim to have the best for MyBroadband at heart. I think we can all agree that the admins and mods also want MyBroadband to be the best it can be. Hence the following invitation:

If we all have MyBroadband’s best interests at heart, the only discussion really is about how best to manage and moderate the forum. This includes technical issues like templates, hosting, apps and plugins, as well as forum management issues like which forum sections we should have, how moderation should be done, forum rules and the like.

The best way for us to see what to do is concrete suggestions. This is NOT comments like ‘have better moderation’ or ‘we need un-biased’ mods. Of course this is true. What will be very helpful is to give feedback like ‘PD needs a dedicated mod, and ‘Member Name will be a great mod in the PD forum’. Or maybe ‘Have a very strict invitation system only for the PD section, creating a ring-fenced area to discuss controversial topics’.

Concrete suggestions will help everyone to see if they agree with it, and will also give the community a chance to give their input on these suggestions. If implemented it can be trialed. If it works, great. If not, we gather more community suggestions and then test another system until we find the best solution.

I hope this was not ‘Too Long, Did not Read’ We are really trying hard to address any concerns and ensure that MyBroadband remains the best place to spend your Gigs online!
