Welcome to Military Mania, a group for ex soldiers to discuss the old days and the equipment we used and the battles we fought. I served with the SADF in 1980/81, primarily with 61 Mechanised Battalion Group and as a CF with 1st Bn Tvl Scottish. I trained at 3SAI, 11 Commando and 1 SAI so am a skutter!

Please refrain from people and SANDF bashing. This is a moderated group initially and anybody who trangresses will be sent to "raak die draad" and "sak vir 50!" Please watch the language, but I know we all learnt lots of stuff from our days in the military and that is bound to creep in.

I am also involved with photographing war graves and war memorials and have an interest in the Boer war too. However, this is not our primary focus.

Please feel free to post pics, but be aware that current military hardware may draw unwarranted attention.

nice man. i was the last intake to do 2yr national service and after us the guys only did a year.
was called up to voortrekkerhoogter (spelling) but as i was still at school it was deferred. the was called up to windhoek/walvisbay (not sure which one) but then i left school and went to kimberly to the diskobolos base. trained as a storeman/clerk and did 6months there then was sent back to cape town to the wynberg military base (11 std) and i finished my 1,5 yrs there.

I was also at discoballas for a few months duiring my 2 years. bloody cold miserable place, but I wasnt at 1 maint, I was at 11 commando, 2nd intake at intelligence school. Brrrrrrr.... lots of memories.

waiting for the invite reminded me of the saying the army had "Hurry up and wait".
jeez i wish i could remember half the guys i did my stint with, man did we have fun.
i agree with you that place was coooold. will look for some of my pics and post although i dont have much otherwise i will see what i can find.

I have a few pics from my army days on the border, but they are now over 26 years old! I have been photographing a lot of old stuff lately, which explains the aircraft in the gallery, and have a lot more in my files, I will add them as time goes by.
My all time favourite military maneuver is "move camp 2 foot to the left!"

ha ha. i have some pics of my old man when he did his stint on the border he told us he was guarding the beers.
