i trust cydia

it will publish required jailbreak patches to retain the ability to restore to custom firmware (it's known to do this), and it maintains your shsh blobs, which i don't think any of the others do, tried icy for a while, was disappointed when i realized that somehow it doesn't pick up on the newest releases as quick as cydia, despite using the same repositories.... like i said, i just trust in cydia, it's much more, propper... saurik understands the springboard and mobile OS better than most developers

yeah i guess you are right..

however i would like to try out rock as well. wonder if i can install both. edit: not recommended apparently.. will just go with cydia

I have done it a couple of times... But when I open Itunes, blackrain doesn't finish and when I restart my Iphone as stated a rerun blackrain no luck...

Roland, what version of iTunes are you using? I have tried your tut on the iphone 3G and have not been successful. just sits with the usb screen on and nothing else.

EDIT: when runnning blackra1n for the first time, i open itunes and it doesnt even recognise the device is plugged in :/

ok im giving up for the night. still not working. have tried all I can think of doing. itunes open/closed. reboots of phone. Still nothing, just hangs on the USB screen. and nothing.

This has been explained... Twice.... Once to you...

Because purplera1n is for jailbreaking ONLY standard firmware

pwnage tool creates pre jailbroken firmware without baseband upgrades from apple firmware, you can skip using pwnage if you are already jailbroken, and then getting a copy of the custom firmware someone else created with pwnage tool

people with network locked phones use pwnage, they always will, any other method can permanently network lock you out, or at the very least will lock your phone for a while (while being weeks),the rest of us who made the right choice and bought our phones here (SA - Vodacom) use the easy stuff like redsn0w or blackra1n

there is one exception, which should be ignored, but for completeness (and to prevent anyone from going on about 'but I used redsn0w last time and i am unlocked') if an unlock exists for the basband in the latest apple firmware, you can restore straight to that, use an easy jailbreak, and then install an unlock, this never works long as apple tends to patch such basebands quick

this happens rarely, 3.0 was such a scenario, as was 3.0.1 (same baseband)

This just means you'll have 3.1.2 shsh on file, which is fine, 3.1.2 is the highest known jailbreakable 3gs, meaning, that if something goes wrong, the 3.1.2 shsh can be used to restore down to 3.1.2, which can be jailbroken, you're fine
