Thread: New technology being tested in SA.

Default New technology being tested in SA.

    Hi Guys,

I have been reading the forum with great interest. While i wish I could offer a silver bullet to get around this silly situation that we are all in I cant. But What I can offer is a a chance to try something that would speed up your web browsing and web based downloads by around 5-8 times while at the same time decreasing the number of bytes sent and received over your line. Right now the system only works on HTTP traffic, however in few weeks time we will be releasing a SME version of the service in the USA and Europe which will include a e-mail compression module which will optomise e-mail by around 50-80% depending on content. We are also looking for pilots to try out the SME system please mail me if you are interested.

We are currently piloting the residential version of Artera turbo in conjunction with the nice people at IS. please see www.arteraturbo.com for more info on how the system works. If any of you would like to try the residential version out for free please go to http://download.Artera.com/SA and download the zip file to your hard drive. Then extract the files and run the install shield wizard which will walk you through the configuration of the client.

There is a speed test utility built into the client which will test your connection speed with and without Artera Turbo running. I would recommend that you visit www.toast.net/performance which has a similar speed test but is independent of the Artera network for a comparison. Both these tests measure the throughput of HTTP traffic by comparing the time taken to download a mixture of data to the size of the file. The results may very depending on what time you connect and the congestion of the greater internet at that time.

Built into the client is a users guide which should be able to answer most of your queries however should you have any issues please feel free to drop me a line.

I just tried the speed test link on this page.. Without using Artera Turbo I get 138Kbps when using the system I get 538Kbps. Note I am using a 1Mb Cable modem from the UK.

If any of you decide to try the system please let em know your speed test results.

    thanks

You're using a 1 Mb line and you get 138 Kbps, 538 Kbps with this gadgety thing.... That isn't something to brag about you know... Or am I missing something here? [?]

Well its all about data optomisation. The first test without the gadgety thing was indicative of the congestion of my local cable providers network. The second test using the gadgety thing shows the difference the data optomisation makes.

Sure its nothing to brag about that I got 138K without it, in fact it goes to show that its not a broadband utopia over here either. All I can say is try it and see first hand how it works. You being in North America Jerrek you should go to www.arteraturbo.com and download the version which is best suited to your location.

Thanks for the link. It looks interesting, but I don't think I need it. :) I have a 6 Mbps cable line at home and web pages pretty much open instantly.

You are making me a very jealous individual... [:p] part of the point of posting to this forum is to see if our thinking is right. that this service might have legs in SA. And by the sounds of things so far we seem to be headed in the right direction.

I have just installed the client.

    Prior to installing speed test was between 70 & 90 K after installing between 145 - 165 K.

Going to do some browsing and downloading, test it out.

    Thanks

Cant wait for the capped T1 ! :-D

Darren keep using it, it actually gets faster with regular use.. Our intelligent caching and global data centres work together to create a profile of what sites you visit regularly and these are then prefetched to improve performance even more.

Spread the word because the more people we have on the pilot the earlier we can go to commercial launch.

Well, I was figuring, what the hell, maybe it will work for me. I couldn't make it work though. It seems to be having issues with me being behind a firewall and NAT device. I have a Linux computer with two network cards, 192.168.0.254 and the other IP is my cable IP, and I am on a LAN and Linux does port forwarding and stuff. It seems not to like that. I wanted to take the speed test before and after... Ah well. This is before: http://home.cogeco.ca/~johannj/net_stuff/toast1.jpg If you have suggestions, teknofobe, maybe I can give you one for afterwards.

    Hey there

I just installed it on my machine (I am not the network specialist here, but just to fill you in on how we are connected : we run ADSL with a DLink ADSL 4 port router - myself and 2 other guys in my office connect directly to the router, which is connected directly to the adsl line, and then I run the rest of my office (approx. 6 other machines) off the 4th port - we run a cable from the 4th port to another router, which is connected to the other 6 machines).

When I ran the speed test (3 times - with, without, and with again) I get the following results :

    #1 (with) : time : 121.28 secs speed 75 Kbps
    #2 (without) : time : 86.05 secs speed 106 Kbps
    #3 (with again) : time : 37.20 secs speed 115 Kbps

Looks like it could be a cool product - keep us posted.

    Hey Sian,

FOr the kind of set up you guys have we have a SME version of the system which works through a gateway on your LAN which communicates with our DC at IS, the clients are loaded on each machine and we perform optomisation within the LAN and the WAN. In test in the US we have noticed a recution in HTTP traffic in the LAN of 75% and on the WAN link of 85% along with the speed increases.

The version you are testing is marketed for residential users, the SME version will be availbale from the 15/08. And will also feature a POP3/SMTP/IMAP mail compression and optomisation module. Which means more savings on bandwidth, by compressing the mail before it reaches your network.

Thanks for the feedback and I will keep you posted as to new developments.
