Thread: stactic IP

    Default stactic IP

    Hi all,

In the "User feedback: Important" thread
    RathE posted:

One thing that needs to be cleared up, to those wanting static IP's. Think on it , you are asking for a stactic IP that is therefore in the diginet catagory, which naturally costs a fortune. Having a static IP at R900 a month is being silly, it defeats the whole point of every other telkom service and , I may be wrong here but I doubt it, no other county/service provider would be insane enough do give that to customers.

    end quote.

This is one of my major problems with ADSL, ISDN provides staic IP.

I had my ISDN lines upgraded to adsl, on telkom's advise, becuse the call cherges were so high (I suspect that the server was being pinged to keep the line open. But, as I have no proof, consider it as me being paranoid). When the line was installed my ISDN conection was down graded to Analogue and the Telkom tech said that as he didn't do servers I was on my own.

With no help from telkom, and no email for 4 days I discoverd that ADSL did not support eturn or smtp mail, due to the lack of a static IP address (availible with ISDN or Dialup). so in the end I had to upgrade my server, install new software and change my service provider, all of which cost more than the instilaton of telkom's recomended fix.

Again this was not stated up front, in fact I asked if it would work and was answered in the afermitive. Not in writing allas.

    Cheers
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

In telskums defense ( *ahem* can't believe I'm doing this ), they do state that there is no static IP and that the modem will be dropped every 24hours. However, all is not lost. There are service providers out there that offer dynamic DNS. Each time you connect, you just update your DNS entry, wait for the IP to propagate and your server is accessable to everyone. This will enable you to use any service on your server - your smtp server for example.

Here's a list of the service providers I am aware of ...

    dhs.org
    dyndns.org
    hn.org
    no-ip.com
    zonedit.com
    easydns.com
    ods.org

The only one I'm familiar with is easydns as this is the one I use.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Grubman,

In the router how do you set up the PAT and NAT parameters for port forwarding, etc ?

I have a static IP in the UK @ £22 per month .... don't know about SA, but in UK, you can get as much IP addresses from RIPE as long as you can give a reason for why you want them (and off course they approve)

    hi pdos,

I've got the Telskum marconi ethernet router ( couldn't get any others in cpt at the time ) and have left it on the defaults - except the default password for the login of course. I then use a linux based firewall ( smoothwall - www.smoothwall.org ) on an old p75 with two network cards. I'm using the router as a modem and not as a router and have configured the firewall to do the port forwarding. This setup works quite well since when telskum reset the line smoothwall automatically reconnects and updates my dynamic DNS.

    Hi Grubman,
    thanks for the reply.
I use Shorewall as my firewall but the principle will be the same.

Why cant we have a static IP? If we are online 24/7, we are using an IP 24/7. Why can't we just have 1 IP dedicated to us? In other countries you are able to get a static IP with your ADSL which costs a fraction of what we're paying.

It is also possible to forward your domain name and MX mail records to your dynamic ip, it's just sadly not the ideal solution.
