Years ago when I was growing up in Mafikeng, it was the favourite pastime of low-class Boers living in the compound of the railways' workers to descend on us young Africans to beat the hell out of us for no reason other than that we were not their colour.

Their violence usually took a turn for the nasty on what was then-called Dingaan's Day (December 16) and Kruger Day (October 10), when the bully Boers would assault and taunt us: "******, roep jou broer Dingaan. Waar's Dingaan nou, jong?"

Jon Qwelane is a hate-stoker. What was the point of the article? So there was a racist incident after a road-rage accident? And now the solution is to stoke more hatred? And bring up more events from the past to remind us of why we should practice race violence in the present? Give me a break. This article does nothing to solve or quell the situation. It is just another piece of racially tainted writing. But to suggest that a black journalist might be wrong... that is racism.

Sorry to hear about Jon's history and experiences, but these are his experiences not the General Population.
If by writing about these events in his life are going to heal his wounds then so be it, but he should realise that stoking past racial tensions into his articles is going to paint his career as a Journalist into a certain vein, a Bullard-Type of Journalist for the choice of a better description.

My advice to Jon is to rather be positive about his current life. He has a better life now, a job and probably a whole lot of other perks that goes with his position and should focus on today and his future.
And if Jon feels he must continue with his train of thought about Boere and the likes then perhaps he should go and visit some of these Boere and see what they are doing today, not yesterday. He may discover that many of these Boere have moved on, perhaps sorry about the past and are probably going out of their way to heal tensions on their Farms or wherever.

well, you guys getting irked by him, do have recourse - if you figure he's promoting race hatred, there are legal bodies to complain to.
There's also the Ombudsman of the newspaper.

There's also the option of crafting a letter, explaining how he's causing racial hatred, and
sending it to all the advertisers on that page where his column is, advising them that their products will no longer be bought, given that they clearly see nothing wrong with being connected to such a racist, hate mongering newspaper column..
(This option if spread around via the net, can be VERY effective).

On Sunday I heard the rather gratifying story of an African man who had been savagely insulted - yet again without any provocation - by a racist cyclist and his wife.

Jon Q and his arsesumptions. How do you know that this "esteemed" black gentleman didn't drive this "racist" white man and his wife off the road? If it were me I may have reacted similarly.

Unfortunately, this black man has now raised the playing field from mere hate speech to physical assault. This guy is clearly no better than those "low-class Boers" that beat you up when you were 10, thanks for pointing that out.

Don't be stupid, Jon, this is just boys being boys. I've been called far worse by white people and have had the presence of mind to be annoyed, but just walk it off.
