    Default The Healthy Snack Thread

Recently I have been spending a lot of time in the kitchen, especially at night, which has resulted in far too many late night snacks! These have all been of the unhealthy sort like crisps, chocs, biscuits etc and I want to start snacking on tasty but healthy recipes rather.

I reckon snacking is probably one of the biggest causes of weight-gain so I am hoping you can share some of your ideas for a healthy snack that can replace crisps and biscuits!

    Carrot slices and homemade dip.

Pros: Versatile because the dip can change and stores well in the fridge. Also pretty cheap.
Cons: Requires preparation of a dip although you could make a bunch in advance like humus which is pretty healthy and tasty!

Veg pasta salad - just roast some veg with good balsamic, whole garlic, chilli and plenty black pepper. Boil pasta (could even use 2min noodles but ditch the MSG induced kark they give you). Combine with a little olive oil if necessary when ready!

Pros: versatile as you can change the theme to thai by adding oyster and soy sauce instead of balsamic and adding some grated ginger - or whatever theme you like. Stores well too in the fridge. Veg cna be bought pre-packed too and this is a pretty good healthy lunch as well.

Cons: Requires cooking and cleaning, the latter nobody enjoys. Cooking can be a pro if you enjoy it and are an insomniac like me.

You can also make crisps out of almost all veg. One of my favourites is tomato crisps. Thinly sliced, salt, cayenne pepper, 100 deg C oven and takes about 30-40min till crisp. Cool and enjoy...

Pros: great substitute for crisps and much healthier and tastier. Can create your own flavour combinations just avoid too much salt and MSG.

    Cons: Lenghty cooking time

Maybe work out why you are not sleeping and then you don't have to worry about what you are eating late at night. I also suffer from insomnia from time to time but I've found that Melatonin sorts that out for me. It's a herbal product that you can get from any good pharmacy. Works great, and you don't get that hung-over feeling the next day. Give it a bash!
Why yes, my one eye is bigger than the other. Thanks for pointing that out.

Thanks, but I am quite enjoying this no sleep thing. I always found it to be an unproductive, over rated excercise. Off to the doc though cause I believe one more day and I could go insane! Its been 4 days no sleep now!

prevention is better than cure, rather cure your insomnia first, then concentrate on the healthy snax..

I recommend a glass a warm milk + honey before bed, with a slow release magnesium tablet. Calcium and Magnesium work well together and promote good sleep.

Dude are you been serious? Four days and you haven't slept?

Clearly you don't train, try exercising more often during the day and you should be tired by the end of the day. Killove is right, a calcium/magnesium supplement such as Ocean's Milk or even ZMA will definitely promote good sleep.

You need at least a minimum of 6 hours sleep. Try Bio-Boost also to help you sleep.

Regarding your healthy snack. Buy Cracker-Bread from Spar, slices of lean ham/chicken. Slice some tomatoes and slice some cheese. Put it all on the Cracker Bread and there is your healthy snack. You can always alter it, use tuna, slice cucumber - just keep it healthy....
