linux for g/f's lappie

ok so she has a slow celeron m and 1 gig mem, anyhow u know how slow xp gets

all she does is broswe the net and looks at photographs

what is the most user friendly linux for someone who knows just about nothing about pc's

Ubuntu.... it'll be slow, but not as slow as XP. Above all, it's the easiest to learn.

are you going to be doing the installing and setup? if so i would think any linux would do as long as yuo show her where she can find what she is looking for.

Xubuntu would also be an option, although GNOME (i.e. Ubuntu's Window Manager) is far easier to use.

gOS is based on the Ubuntu 7.10 distribution and a GUI largely imitative of Mac OS X Leopard. The earlier versions (1 and 2-beta) used the Enlightenment 17 window manager instead of the usual GNOME or KDE desktops, to create a desktop that had similar usability to Mac OS X. This was possible because of the flexibility of Enlightenment. Enlightenment acts both as an X window manager, and as a desktop environment. Therefore early versions gOS worked on systems as low end as a 350 MHz Pentium II with 196 MB of RAM.[8] But a typical gOS system would have used as a minimum a 1 GHz Pentium III with 256 MB RAM. After gOS2-beta the later versions of gOS abandoned the use as Enlightenment as desktop manager (although some E17 code still seems to be used), in favour of using GNOME, with Compiz Fusion and the Avant Window Navigator. This increased the need for memory to values similar to normal Ubuntu.

If Ubuntu is going to be slow then gOS is going to be even worse with all the graphical bells and whistles it has.

Try Ubuntu, you can just install it on a partition and then see how it goes for you. I've just put it on an old laptop of mine and it works pretty nicely. I can't compare though considering my laptop is a 2.8Ghz P4 with 786MB of RAM .

No ways... a gb of ram... ubuntu will fly... dont waste your time with xubuntu, you by far have the hardware to run gnome (Its runs slow on 256mb of ram or less)

yea 1 gig of ram of ram is cool but a 1.6ghz celeron not so cool

anyways downloaded ubuntu now and will install this week sometime

finally a pc to test some linux stuff out

Yeah, ubuntu the best bet, for sure. 1 gig RAM is plenty, no need to worry with a 1.6Ghz celeron either, IMO.

What graphics card she got?
