Hi guys,

My router was resest from the exchange on saturday night round about 19:15. When it connected again upload profile was changed to 512kbits/s from 384. Now suddenly I cannot connect to my ISP to get an IP assigned. The LCP does not seem top come up to negotiate authentication - I phoned my ISP which told me it must be at the exchange...any ideas? The router is fine, rebooted it a few times. I'll keep on trying Telscum helpdesk but they are breaking records today...my patience grew thin by 45min...

Have You tried resetting the router, by pressing the pin at the back with a pen, this will restore it to default settings and you will have to re-enter your isp username & pass.

If that doesn't work try another router so you can be sure its the line/exchange and not the router thats faulty.

Will try another router tonight and do the hard reset on my current router...must have slipped my mind. Thanks.

Not a router problem, they probably messed coffee on the dslam card at the exchange and now she's broken....will go to a telkom shop at lunch to report - 0800 375 375 she's broken as well....

You'll have to phone to log the support call, you can't do that at the branch. Last year sometime I had a problem with my adsl line to I went to the local branch, I explained to the teller but he said he can't do anything, he just passed over a phone from the counter and told me to call the support number.

If the ADSL router connects, but no IP is assigned (I am assuming "line is up" but you do not "authenticate") it is usually an exchange problem.
Basically, you are connected to the exchange, but the exchange itself is not connected to anything.
This happens to me at least once every 6 weeks.

Have you check the SAIX noticeboard to see if there are any faults at your exchange. You can check from the telkomsa.net website, from the menu select support >> noticeboards

Definitly the exchange, happens to me occationally, not sure if its the call logged with Telkom or it just comes back by itself.

Never more than 24hrs

Try to set up a PPPoe connection directly from the workstation (Sometimes works)

I have had similar problems on a number of client's adsl connections. Seems that when they(meaning the server at telkom side) renew the session, it cuts the connection on your side, but something goes gaga on their side and it holds on to old session info, thus no new session can be initiated.

You have to call the dreaded 0800375375 and tell them to reset your session. Don't let them talk you into anything else, or follow any of their tech advice, ignore anything they say, just keep going like broken record and force them to reset the session.

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!! Ok thanks guys...wil ask them to reset. It happened with this damn upload speed increase when they changed my profile.

Which options on the support number? The service has been terrible the last few days, waiting 40mins+......What are people complaining about? ;-)

ok aborg..... i have the same problem, although, i'm on 384k.....everything look fine and dandy, but I cannot connect, things like bad username/password, cannot negotiate pppoe connection. Tried the router over at a friends house and it works better than ever (installed new firmware as I thought it may help in some unknown way :( ) Also tried another router...

Have you got through yet, or are you the one keeping the consoltants, err... probably only one consultant (I deduct this from the time I've had to hold on....) busy?? haha lol, damn telkom = FAIL Can't wait for neotel to come to my area, ffs

Success!!!! after holding on for wait....72min....thanks JohnnyQ they reset the session at the exchange; now back to 'normal'...whatever normal is. Patience is a virtue.

Sludge better start calling and holding, put it on speaker and listen to the nice telkom music and the 'tannie' telling you to please hold on.....it is by the way a free call hehe.

o my! 72 min, I'm only on 40 min now.....eish, My speakerphone refuses to work, dammit, cheap telkom phone!!!! :( Glad to hear you got it sorted!

Yeah, if this call was not free, I would probably be bankrupt.. lol

I did try earlier today and yesterday, but had somewhere else to go, so I had to hang up after about half an hour, and it's going to happen again now, have to leave in 10 minutes, will have to keep tommorow morning open, eish...

Aha a free call cap at 90min - damn bastards... :)

btw got hold of my area supervisor, they really don't like it, and they will hopefully start fixing the local boxes on the telephone poles on Thursday. Then I might be able to go 4meg from 2meg. Currently have terrible noise and attenuation...will try and post a pic of the current one - currently hosting a family of small birds.

i'm having the same problem unfortunately, is there any reason why this happens or is it just random. called the helpline was on hold for who knows how long told the lady my problem asked if they can just reset my session, they say no its a problem with my isp and is an authentication problem and puts the phone down...(screams as loud as possible)F##########CK...i know its not an authentication problem coz i tried a WA,OW and TI account all with the same outcome.

I hate my luck

For me its been random, sometimes aggravated by rain although the frequency is directly proportional to how urgently you need the line
