Anyone actually got a Creative X-Fi soundcard working under Ubuntu Hardy 64-bit?

LOLZ, he's expecting Creative to support Linux. They don't even support Windows, at least not for products that came out last week. O and they sue anyone who actually improves their drivers.

Sorry man, I have to rant. Do yourself a favour and never buy creative again.

Well, there wasn't much of an alternative when I bought the thing. I'd get the Asus card if I was in the market at the moment.

Anyway, it's not a big deal. It's mainly for gaming... Which I do in Windows anyway. Onboard will do for when I use Linux.

sudo - gives temporary root(super user permissions)
apt-get - will fetch the package(in this case: ubuntusemase) and its dependancies
<package>

You can do it for nearly anything. Want VLC? sudo apt-get vlc. Want banshee? sudo apt-get banshee :P Enjoy...

g_k, I would suggest that new users stick to using Synaptic for installing packages. Using "apt-get" should be a last-resort, when Synaptic is not able to do the job. There's a very good reason that Ubuntu achieved so much popularity, thanks to the far lower need for using the CLI.

On-topic, it would be great if CL would either bring out Linux drivers for the X-Fi, or assist the community to do so.

Okay, okay... But it can't find "ubuntusemase" with Synaptic or the terminal. The terminal says "E: Invalid operation ubuntusemase".

i assume wcoetzee is a disgruntled one time user of linux. and specifically ubuntu it would seem.

as to your question, visit the alsa site and search there for which alsa module the card uses. I would do it but the site is blocked at work.

Creative recently put out a second beta for the X-Fi for Linux, I've seen it on offer at the download section of their website. Apparently it runs much better than the first beta, but it's also buggy.

I'd suggest you look there, but I haven't been able to get there myself. Every time my browser just reports an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error. Heaven knows when they'll sort their website out.
