I cannot say that I approve, but, as someone who is a omnivore, I guess I cannot shout out my opposition too loud either.

    Good shooting.

Everyone that eats meat should kill and slaughter an animal now and again to remind themselves where that stuff in the packets comes from..

What is the price per Kudu these days ?

We have a few strowling over the farm from time to time and we shoot them. I'm just curious as to what they cost these days ... R 3k ?
A Pitbull is a small dog with a big heart. But if provoked will pounce without warning and cause large amounts of hideous damage.

Great! Congratulations. You outsmarted a few deer and made them suffer with the help of a bullet. Your mother would be so proud.

But I suppose you did it all in the name of biltong, so that makes it better!

It depends on weight. I think it is about R18-R20/kg (excl head & hoofs).

Get a clue. Most of the wildlife you are able to see today anywhere is paid for with hunting money. Ethical hunting pays for conservation.

You think those fancy leather shoes you are wearing were made from cows that died peacefully in their sleep?

As I said, get a clue.

ETA: Normal kudu around R3000-4000. Trophy can be up to around R8K.

Hunting is not bad, as long as the animal stocks are not endangered.

I actually thought this would be the response

Too clarrify some points, we were all very specific about what we shot, the PH's with us made sure of that as well. No cows with calves and not the stud bull of herd for example. In essence just older cows that have gone dry or rams/bulls that walked alone.

Everyone of the animals was shot cleanly and died from the first shot within 20 meters of being shot.

We didn't shoot for trophies as this isn't what we were after. Everything we shot will be processed and split basically 40%/60% between fresh meat and biltong that we will consume. Hell we even had liver and kidneys on two of the nights we were hunting. I personally have no objection to shooting something that I am going to eat, I see it as waste though if your going to kill something you won't eat.

Comming from a farming family as this I see this as the normal process, hell we run a cattle stud to provide cows and bulls to commercial farmers who then breed these cattle purely for slaughter.

As to the prices: Impala R800, Kudu Bull R7500+ depending on length of horns Kudu cow R2800, Blue Wildebees R3000. Converted back to a price per kilo of meat processed its between R18-22/kg, your best being an Eland which you can get for R16/kg but your going to shell out around R9000 to shoot one.

Comparing the average price of what you pay for game these days too what a butcher charges you for beef makes it all worth while in my opinion.

I'm with DJStealth on this one..
Hunting is for those with inferiority complexes.
And this doesn't contradict me eating meat.

There's a difference between sustaining yourself, and shooting a defenseless animal and calling it a sport.
If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for everything.

The sign of an industry that requires a shake up if you ask me. The reason that wildlife conservation has to go to these lengths is because of the lack of funding from other sources such as government and the general public who would rather pay for a hunt than a breeding program (vast generalisation I know). And the conservation programs that you refer to are cherry picked for statistics IMO, but I have not done the research to back up this claim. Its like saying that anti-drug campaigns are paid for by drug dealers - even if it were true, it still wouldnt make what they do right!

I have no problems with hunts arranged for culling purposes, but animals bred for the sole purpose of being hunted is where I draw the line. Telling me to get a clue is absurd - I am merely disagreeing with your point of view.

I cant say I didnt expect this kind of flaming.

If trees could scream would we be so cavalier about cutting them down. What if they screamed all the time for no reason?

Support your local government ambulance service! We are doing so much with so little, we should all now be qualified to do anything with nothing!
