can i claim tax on a car i dont own but have driven????
I have always done it myself (yes, i know not everyone knows how) and whenever anyone tells me they are paying someone to do it, it shocks me. There is so little to do once you have summarised all your information and given it to the person. And for most people it is even simpler as it is an IRP5, an RA certificate and medical expenses only. And they pay someone R300 to punch in these three figures for them....
Yes, if you are a commission earner (although it is still basic) and have complex returns then fine but for the regular salary earner it is really easy to do it yourself!
My immediate answer would be a definite no.
What would you be claiming? There is no wear and tear for you. You are not paying the vehicle off. The only thing you could possibly claim is your petrol expense if you used the vehicle as a necessity in the earning of your income but even then only if you earn most of your money from commission.
I e-filed on Monday the 6th and my refund was in my account on Tuesday night the 7th. Very quick indeed.
Registered for e-filing about 10 days back. Went to check today on status and got the following very scary message: Tax Number Reserved - Awaiting case resolution.
WTF does that mean?
Am about to stress myself into a heart attack

I'm in the same boat kinda, I had my car till may last year and it got stolen. Till end of September I was using various cars (family cars) to get to work and meet clients, can I claim a stolen vehicle as a loss on my part ?
What else can I deduct from my tax form ? I'm running a company that hasn't seen profit yet, can I deduct those losses ?
just logged into my efiling profile. IRP5 data already loaded into the return for me. pretty cool. i just dumped in address details, medical aid info from certificate, and km's travelled. now just for the RA and medical receipts and I'm done. looks like its gonna be over R13k according to their calculator :-)
Time flies when you don't know what you're doing.
I have a tax question...
My IRP5 says the following:
Code: 4486
Description: Med. Aid Capped Amount
Amount: R5830
That amount shouldn't really appear as my remunerations is supposed to be a set amount with no deductions. I assume the fact that it's there means that I was not taxed on that amount throughout the year. That's fine. Now for the question.
I pay my own medical aid fees and get a statement from Old Mutual at the end of the year. The amount I paid was higher than R5830. When completing my tax return online, do I change the R5830 to the full amount, do I add an additional line for the difference or is R5830 the maximum I can claim on?
Thanks!
can i claim for all the doctors visits, i do have all the receipts and some are very expensive gynae ones for my wife which i had paid .
she is a housewife on an allowance..
Why dont you just go to your local SARS Branch with all your stuff and they will fill it in for you for free, plus they will be able to tell you straight away if you will get some money back or have to pay in.
