Default Mbeki's pension 100% of salary

    http://www.news24.com/News24/South_A...400211,00.html

Cape Town - The former president, Thabo Mbeki, will continue to have all the payments, salaries and other packages that he was receiving the day before he left office, for the rest of his life.

A resolution passed by the National Assembly on Friday also allows the former president to have annual pay increases based on those recommended by the Remuneration Commission.

He will also have his medical insurance fully paid.

The resolution grants 50% of his package to his widow if he should die.

    Is this normal?

Lets just say it does not shock me.

I'm pretty sure the US presidents are more than looked after when they leave office.

    Yep normal.
Then there is the cost of his security - that'll be way more.

And he just got a nice raise not too long ago.

SA president salary is pretty cr@appy. Like 1.4mil last time I checked. Quite a few of the ministers top that easily.

Pension to prez is 100% tax free.

Of course. I'm just saying that for those wishing to make big $$$ being president is not the way to fly. And given the public scrutiny, death threats etc its really not that great.

What I want to know is what the word "packages" in the article means. Does that include say the blue light brigade & armoured cars?

I would assume that 'packages' would include security detail and I suppose that this is the same for all ex presidents.

Well Old FW De K still has his Blue Light Brigade and the additional extra services of the SAPS on 24 hour shifts who stand around watching the grass grow.

I read somewhere that the USA passed a bill to stop this. GW Bush will be the first ex-president not to get the security of the Secret Service.
