Now somebody tell me SBC is not partly responsible for the abortion we call Telkom [xx(]
It won't be long before we find similar rulings against Telkom over here. The VANS story with the 1.7 billion is only the beginning of more litigation. It seems by accepting SBC into SA, the state probably unknowingly at the time didn't realise that they had invited some "real" capitalists.
This transition from state controlled entity to full blown listed legally protected monopoly with foreign management is hardly what SA actually needed. They got the numbers right on the balance sheet, but that’s about all they did.
Isn't it ironic in SA? In Telkom's case you will hear from the board how well Telkom did and how they have managed in just one year to increase the shareholding value of several thousand black shareholders. They will use an example that the average man on the street can go figure, like the shares that were worth R22 are now worth R80 and translated means that the shares that were worth R600 are now worth R1800. How many of those shareholders still own those shares. And how does R1800 actually uplift anyone. They might have food for a month and pay a bill or two, but they have not actually been sustained in any means that is long term or in a way that will uplift anyone. I other words, owning a few shares is not going to put the bread on the table for any long term period. But had they offered several thousand black people jobs in Telkom they would of definitely uplifted the people of SA. But as we have heard the news, Telkom is retrenching staff at a rate of 10% to 15% per year.
Its time that the masses of people in SA told the story the way it should be told and explain to these shareholders that they have had the wool pulled over their eyes. They have been used. They needed them to be able to list Telkom on the stock exchange. To keep the numbers right for the political agenda. When SBC's management is finished with Telkom they are going to dump, sell and run back to USA. And the people left in SA will have shares in a Company that has a sorry reputation for Anti Competitive behaviour and will the damage done to it's public image ever be restored.

TAKE SOME PERSONAL ****ING RESPONSIBILITY!!!
heheheheheheh ;)
just kidding
SBC is the worst mistake the Government ever made for South Africa, thank heavens the heat's under Hellkom's a$$ on the TV news and in newspapers etc.
Soon things will change - and hopefully the SBC/Telkom yanks will be running with their tails between their legs, never to return. Not even for a holiday. Even though they'll probly retire on their dividends now and look for a place to settle they should stay away from SA. If they REALLY have to come to South Africa, send them to Piesangfontien. Maybe they'll learn some Afrikaans and pick up a backbone somewhere.
