Sure this doesn't fall within the realm of pie-in-the-sky or mere wishful thinking? Deployment would entail fixing the regulatory environment first, and I haven't heard a peep from those in the corridors of power about this - mebbe my people-in-the-know are just mushrooms these days...
Not to mention that the cables will get stolen on a weekly basis.
Even the alarmed cable systems (Telkom-Rosebank) still gets nailed on a far too regular basis.

I never hear about cable theft in Cape Town. Is it a regional thing?
We use it up north to cut down on delivery costs. Put the stuff in one place, sure as hell next morning it's gone :-)
(Updated)
But look where it ends up...

Yikes, and we end up paying for it in the end.
If the punishment doesn't fit the crime (eg. stop it) then make it more harsh!
Simple: Steal cable, lose balls.
Let me repeat it: Steal cable, lose balls.

Nope - the thieves should be locked up until they learn the error of their ways. It's the ***kers that buy the stuff who should be castrated - if there were no buyers, there would be no market or motivation for the theft - where did I read or hear about some ***eholes in Cape Town or Durban somewhere, who were busy exporting melted plates made from stolen cable?
Sorry, maybe I was unclear. Everybody in the chain of theft should have the B's cut off...

what? this form isnt about cable theft...
well here in cape town more in somersetwest there is a huge cable network installed by one of the sister companies i work for. roll out will happen soon. with varius packages availibl to sute your pocket and needs.
bradley, I think the idea of a cable television network in South Africa just seems highly unlikely to most people on this forum. We've just read about too many things that never see the light of day. Add to that the failure of the SNO, failure to deliver a decent and reliable broadband service by both Sentech and Telkom. Icasa's failure to keep a leash on Telkom. It all nurtures a certain level of cynicism. That's where most of us are coming from, but please if you have some reliable/trustworthy info on this, please do share.
