    Default Tie-lines, ISDN & DSL

    Hi all,

Does anyone know if it is possible to connect 2 ISDN modems with one another over a Telkom Tie-line (outdoor extenstion) that runs through PCM? Also, are there any other modems (dsl) that one could use?

Finally, how exactly does a Tie-line running over PCM actually work and what does PCM stand for? I know that Telkom normally use PCM when the tie-line runs over 2 or more exchanges.

    Thanks a million [:D]

    Pulse Code Modulation ....
you will not be able to get 2 isdn modems to connect but you should be able to get a DSL link with the right equipment ...

the problem is the speed of the PCM might only allow low speeds [used to be 64kbs] you will be able to put two "diginet+ modems" back to back and get it up and running but will need routers and the like on bothends and you can expect to pay $$$

for a cheaper slower link 2 duxbury external modems [the more expensive ones] can operate in a special leased line mode upto 33.6kbs Async back to back ..

i know in the old days you could make a plan im not sure how this will be done today ...

prehaps someone knows what an equivilent solution is ... if you do get 2 of these devices one must be set to slave and one master ...

I have no idea what this PCM and tie-lines are that you guys are discussing, but I do have a question, perhaps it's the same as asked by Burny1. If it is, be kind don't kill me...

In the same way you can connect two computers using a dial-up modem on each end, can the same be done using ISDN modems on each end? and, will there be an increase in speed compared to using dial-up?

    thanks

as far as i know that is not possible as the modems do not generate the ISDN signaling required only the exchange does ...

even if you connect 2 56k modems back to back the highest speed obtainable will be 33.6k as the sgnaling is missing ... 56k is only one direction and requires ISDN kit on the awnsering side ...
