Thread: Telkom 3G Live ! in Durban

  1. #1

Default Telkom 3G Live ! in Durban

I bring good news to Durbanites that Telkom 3G has gone Live on a few sites in the Durban area. I will confirm the exact areas by the end of the month.
Those people living in the Overport area you should pick up the SA 02 Operator on your 3G phone if you do a network search.

Could all Durbanites please do a network search on their 3G phones and post replies with areas that you are picking up the signal.

Telkom Direct Shops do have sim cards in stock. If you got Coverage, Please go get a sim card now.

i havn't tested the service yet but my informer at Telkom has confirmed that Overport has gone live. Approximately 30-40 sites are being worked on currently in the Durban area. TELKOM will erect about 5 new masts of their own. They are sharing tower space with VodaCOM.
The towers are going live as they are completed. The Durban switch is working and can connect and route Voice calls. All towers have to be ready by end of feb 2009. The official launch is the last week of march 2009. Will keep u updated when i know more.

@DXL: Do you have any further information regarding Telkom HSDPA speed upgrades to 14.4Mbps etc? With no 14.4Mbps devices currently available it would have been a good marketing stunt to launch with a 14.4Mbps ready network and then claim to have a technically superior network with the fastest, most cost-effective technology to attract customers.

That would be awesome but technically they are ahead with full 7.2 coverage. I read news from the other hspa providers saying they were 'upgrading' to hspa, with no real detail yet. Also, I still see many 3.6 devices being sold - haven't seen a 14.4 device yet but a good news reporter will happily climb in if an operator claims a fast network but hasn't done their homework with stock of devices.

The network is fairly un-busy so it's probably a good time to try. I haven't tried it yet but I have tried both the other's and I rejoice when I even get a short burst of 1.4 mbps, let alone 3.6 or 7.2!
