the IP's all start with 41 and the next numbers are 26,27,28 and 29
if i was in CSI i would think that is a clue to whats wrong?

right, I don't know about anyone else here, but I am back!!!!! don't seem to be having any more 504's which is leaving me grinning from ear to ear, now I can waste valentine's day cybering..

Just for future reference, do you have any idea what actually went wrong? I'm just curious, since it was such a weird error.
Upgrades to some of the in-line engines introduced some weird errors. The guys managed to resolve it Friday night just after 8PM.
And before everyone comments about how things should be tested, let me assure you these things are tested as much as possible in the labs.
But unfortunately the labs can never simulate a network with so many users on it, so if a load-related issue is present, we often only pick it up in the field.
I understand. I don't blame Vodacom for it. I work as a web developer, so I know all to well how some bugs are only found when something goes live. And it looks like in this case it was obscure enough not to be easily found during testing.
If it did 504's on all sites or messed around with my WoW, it would have been an entirely different situation.

I really have to say shot, and kudo's to you (and the rest of the gang) for getting this sorted ... it's really great to be able to get something in response to problems us users have.
And unless you are actually in the arena, would anyone understand the thousands of variables required to test something.

Well an in-line engine is where the pistons are in a straight line, typically known as a straight four or a straight six (for those lovers of Klippies and Coke!).
Compare with a V6 or V8 where you have 3 or 4 cylinders per side angled to a common crank.
But in this case the term more refers to any device that sits in-between you and the destination server and perform some real-time function on your data stream. So it is an 'engine' (doing something clever) and it's installed 'in-line' (your data flows through it).
For example, a firewall, proxy server, caching engine, virus checker or even a router would all be considered to be in-line engines.
These boxes are obviously very critical as anything that goes wrong with them will affect all data flowing through them.
