The antenna is not the problem, its the connector. Firstly is square and secondly it has a small switch which disables the integrated antenna. If anyone could find/make one these it would be helpful. The antenna would be any cellular/broadband option operating at 1.8GHz. Miro Distribution stocks these. I doubt the WBS will cover the warranty on a terminal which was damaged due to a "custom" connector. You need to bear in mind though that any antenna must be OMNI/Circular, this is to allow the towers to offload users. IE when a tower is full it will try and move you to another tower. So directional antennas would hamper service levels for everyone. Also the integrated antenna already puts out 24DBi, so it would be best to get something with similar or greater power. Otherwise an external antenna would be pretty useless. Unless you are merely trying to minimise interference or get LOS.
Heard Poynting might be making something , careful with that connector screw it up and destroy your modem

There's no point in trying to get a grid, or dish for iBurst. The signalling technology isn't directional, but omnidirectional. Using a directional antenna will quite likely worsen your signal... Some of the WBS chaps do actually have an antenna, but it's a small little stick the size of a pen, with a 30cm or so pigtail.

I agree with TheRoDent, as mentioned in my previous post on this topic. The antenna must be Omni. Poynting does manufacture 2 omni antennas which would be suitable. If someone could find a suitable pigtail it would be a great help
TheRoDent,
can you confirm, when you were testing out iBurst, the UTD appears to roam transparently between base stations without dropping the connection?
ic that is correct.
have spoken to guys at miro , they only have yagi 1.8GHz antennas..

Hi All,
I have a iBurst Pigtail, trying to get some made.. may take a while.
I have tried the Yagi from Poynting.. The modem speed drops by at least half. an the Frame error % shoots up...
Will let you all know when I have an omni that works well.. I expect that a lower gain omni would work the best. In the correct Freq. Range..
Will keep you all informed..
I spoke to the guy in charge of the technical side at WBS. They say that an external antennae will be available from them from about Mid-December 2004.
I think that www.webb.co.za might be able to help. Will be giving them a call 2moro
I am able to provide iBurst connectors for Bridge units but not for PCMCIA units - on the assumption they are the same TS6 connectors that are used here in Australia.
The TS5 connectors for the PCMCIA are extremely rare are the company that makes them is charges a lot for them AND makes you purchase in large volume (like 500 units!).

We use Kyocera modems, I assume it would be the same connector. Square with the tiny "switch" to disable to integrated antenna.

Are you in a position to supply iBurst units, i.e. Kyocera AccessCard and AccessBridge?
If so, we must first compare specs of the SA & Aus Kyocera iBurst AccessCard and AccessBridge units - frequencies etc.
WBS refer to the iBurst AccessCard as a UTC, and AccessBridge as a UTD.
What say you?
Trolls stab you in the back and bleed you dry like mosquitoes, and that's why I don't feed the BBL trolls with any new posts.
Hey there IC... unfortunately... iBurst operates at 1.8Ghz in South Africa and 1.9Ghz in Australia... the UT's (we also call them this - User Terminals) are also required to be registered on the WBS network... so even if they were compatible, they wouldnt work on each others network unless a roaming agreement was in place - but since they are slightly different frequencies, its a moot point.
However... the pigtails general cover a range of spectrum and would most likely be compatible.
