Thread: Use of Wireless for ADSL sharing

Default Use of Wireless for ADSL sharing

Hi all - does anyone know the legalities of sharing my ADSL account with my folks across the road using a wireless bridge? Is this still one of Telkom's toys that they don't want to share, or is it legal? Thanks in advance...

As far as I know it's still illegal. If your crossing any sort of boundary.

I would just do it. Who is going to know that your folks are actually connected anyway. While you are about it, share it with the public too. If everyone can hook up to the internet on every corner, free, obviously without the owner knowing about it (wink..wink), it has to bring the price down.

I have just bought a bridge (WAP) and looking to link up to jawug, and my neighbours and anyone else who wishes to connect, without me knowing.

Looking at using CC Proxy to limit the bandwidth. Will download and try shortly.

    Wink Great!

CC Proxy - will check it out...
I hope by limit the bandwidth you dont mean cap it? ;-)
I am hoping to use uncapped UUNET
but i'd NEVER share it with the neighbours! ;-)

Tried CC proxy last night. Will stick to my 602 lan suite. Have found another bit of software that should do the trick for managing bandwidth http://www.softperfect.com/products/bandwidth/
Will try tonight and see. If it works it will be worth the $35 and with the free 602 lansuite (5 users)

Well, I tried softperfect bandwidth manager and I could not get it to work. Could not even get internet connection going, so I did what I always do to software that is not intuative. Removed it.

If someone is using it, let me know, as it could be usefull.

Afr9999.....I had a look at that previously, and asked also on this forum (different thread) if anyone had used it. The problem is it is a Linux system and from what I understand, you have to use a dedicated server. I use my server to run other window applications.

If we can get a system up and running, that is idiot proof, windows based (because it must be for idiots like me) and caps downloads, you could provide legal shared internet access to all the townhouse complexes, all at a low cost. You will need to cap the downloads so it has to be software driven.

A Linksys WRT54G running OpenWRT is all you need.
The OpenWRT Kernel fully supports bandwidth shaping, etc through the standard tc interface. (All you gotta do is figure it out :P www.lartc.org)

So thats a Wireless AP, that does shaping too.. Pretty powerful

Thanks Daffy. I bought a WRT54g from you guys yesterday, now all I need to do is get it to work. I will be using it as a WAP only using my server between the modem and the WAP, mainly because it is already set up that way, and I think it will be a lot easier to install like that. Can I use Openwrt in that instance. If so, maybe someone can assist with the figuring out.
