Bethesda will refer you to a computer shop such as eComp or Korbourne solutions. Im reg'd with them but I dont know how we would get the notebook from here to you in CPT. If you are serious about it I guess we could make a plan

However after those links it seems I need to spend another day or two checking those out!
Geez.. with that kind of budget i'd say go for the Top of the line LG. Unfortunately i've got no experience with LG notwbooks(yet :P) so I can't comment on the support/driver issue.

Does anyone maybe have an account with Proton in Roodepoort? I think they import and distribute Asus Notebooks which also seem like very nice machines, all depent on the price of course. I've used alot of Asus desktop sollutions and if that is anything to go by their notebooks should be very good quality.

Thanks for all the info quik. Its always interesting get opinions on different brands. Let us know how your test drives go

Here's some buyers tips that I didn't mention before. Waroop take note

If you want to know what different notebooks are like but don't know of anyone that's got one then try this website: www.notebookreview.com. Its a forum like myadsl just all about notebooks. Check out the forum, the reviews as well as the user comments about the notebook you're interested in which can be found in the notebook database.

Unfortunately its an American site so some manufacturers aren't on there (like LG and MSI) but then there's always google.

Before you buy make sure you know what you want. Then do all your research and shop around alot. I made the mistake of just going and buying a laptop based on the spec, which I thought was good enough. It turned out to be a complete dud (it was an HP). If I had done a five minute web search I could have found that out before hand and saved myself a good deal of time and money. So it pays to do your research. Google is your friend

Then when you've made up your mind about what you want go to the shop (or if its a dealer then try find a shop that has the same model) and play around with it. This is essential. Try get a feel for it. Nothing can beat actual time spent fiddling with it in the shop. See how fast Adobe Reader opens. It should take about a second or two at the most. How responsive does it feel. Is the screen as good as you want. How about the different resolutions. What does the keyboard feel like and the touch pad. How loud is it. All this experience will either convince you that this is the one or rather to keep looking.

In the end it'll come down to a mixture of features, price and your personal preference. Take your time, do your homework and should get a winner

I definately agree with this. If you're going to be spending R10k or more on equipment propper research is definately needed, even if you're loaded like waroop here(Your surname wouldn't be Shuttleworth perhaps? ) You have to consider all the aspects from Technical specifications to Support, which many people overlook completely, and even asthetics count for something in my book.

Take HP for example. Any person working in the ICT sector long enough will have a story to tell about HP support.

Firstly, they are not cheap, so immediately people make the mistake of thinking they are buying quality (price <> quality). And i agree their pocketPC range for one is excellent.

Secondly, you'll find that HP support overcharge for just about everything. I dropped my PocketPC a while back and wanted the cracked screen replaced. The rest of the PPC was fine and I'm sure all they need to do is remove the screen unit and replace it with a new one. The techie at HP support was fairly honest with me and said "don't bother" as HP will charge you R4k upwards!!! The Pocket PC only costs R2.5k(or R3,5k when I bought it a year ago) So anyone with a spare 3.5" lcd lying around let me know.

And this is pretty much what you can expect with any HP product. So if you ever buy HP, carry it around in a nice kingsize pillow ;P

A bit off topic here but I'm curious to know what LCD products you people think are good value for money. The Acer 19" LCD prices are very good for one and I'll be investigating this after my quest for the ideal notebook is complete

CRT just isn't cricket any anymore... I find my eyes are constantly irritated as I use my office machine quite extensively. I heard LCD is much kinder on the eyes.

    Yep:
    DVD±R/RW for MSI 510c Notebook: R995 (excl)

If you want PM me and I'll send you the price list so you can take a look yourself.

Quik: That dell would knock the socks off all the LG's, at least the ones I saw.

In the end though I actually just decided to go for the MSI, its just a ridiculously good deal, and its everything I need at 50% of the cost:
    MSI 510C Special
Intel Pro Wireless Network Connection 802.11b/g
Two 200-pin SO-DIMM Sockets for expansion up to 2GB
    Intel® 855PM + ICH4-M Chipset
Built-in touchpad with 2 click buttons
    PCMCIA 2.1 Compliant, Type II x 1
Built-in 10/100Mbps Ethernet LAN (Realtek) and 56K Modem Module
    MMC/SD/MS/SM 4-in-1 Card Reader

    15” SXGA+ (1400x1050) - Brightness controlled via Keyboard Hot-Keys
    ATI® Mobility™ RADEON™ 9700 with external 64MB VRAM
    Pentium M 1.6 ghz 2mb
    1024mb DDR3200
    40Gb HDD
    Combo CDRW/DVD
    Integrated 802.11g Wireless LAN Solution
    Parallel Port x 1; USB 2.0 Port x 3; Headphone Out x 1, TV-Out Port x 1
    Monitor (VGA) Port x 1 (15-pin mini D-Sub); IEEE 1394 Port x 1
    RJ11 Port x 1, Mic-in Port x 1, RJ45 Port x 1
    Realtek® ALC655 Chipset Audio/Embedded in ICH4-M
    Li-ion 8 cells battery (4400mAh)
Internal Speaker: 2 Stereo Speakers (1.0 Watt )
    S-Video x1 TV Output
    Weight: 2.9Kg

R 7690 (excl VAT, but since we are getting it through our company we will claim back on that )
Then I get my 7200rpm HDD from storgate for R1k (because a good HDD in a laptop is v important) and I have my system

Say anyone wanna buy a 40GB 5400 rpm laptop HDD?

Waroop.. from where did you get your MSI machine? The one from Pinnacle Micro specs only shows a Radeon9600 GPU and XGA screen. I wasn't aware any other companies are importing them.

_PLEASE_, I'm fetching mine tommorow but if that's a better deal i will most certainly go for it.

GreedyFlyZA.. All the prices i quoted are straight from the price list.. all at cost.

From Pinnacle, you must have an old price list, the stats above for my MSI were from their latest price list (4 days old or so)
