Thread: So I spoke to a Telkom Technician (About the upgrades)

Default So I spoke to a Telkom Technician (About the upgrades)

So today driving back home, I saw a Telkom technician working on the exchange. Now for some reason I stopped and got out of car. Then I proceeded to ask him about the line upgrades.

His reaction? He gives me a blank stare and says "Sir no upgrades I know of, I can't believe it will happen."

Telkom techs dont really know much about new upgrades... they just go out and fix stuff.

The guys that work in the admin departments get updates as when and where what upgrades are taking place....

Not much. The 8mbps pilot is so secret that no-one knows about it!!! They will probably communicate directly with the test group of ADSL customers a few days before the time and not via the media.

The trial may be secret, but are any of our DSLAM's ready for ADSL2+?
    I don't think so.
We're talking about copper that needs to realistically (on a first world level) be replaced with fibre.

I don't see Telkom forking out that kind of cash any time soon.
From a Telkom perspective, they may well be looking at their 3G network as their move into faster broadband.
    Shake&Bake™. That, just happened!

The majority of the DSLAM's are 2+ capable.

ADSL is a copper based technology so it is not required to roll out fibre to the home. The main issue is the state of the copper network.

Well no one can still answer how I was able to get a download speed of 34.5 Mbps / 4.3 Mbps from Giganews news server. Though this was just for the headers. With downloading I was going the correct +-450kB/s download speed on my 4mb line.

i love how when a techie knows nothing it is disregarded. but when he says he knows something it is something to hold onto
