it's a sad state of affairs. my 4870 was miserable on Linux. in fact, on my mythtv setup, I am better of using an nVidia 9500GT than the ATi HD4870 for video card decoding of 1080p content.

killa - there are games for Linux. Not nearly as many as for Windows. It is not like Linux has no games.

No i know that but for majority of your big summer smashes you need windows, so even though people use linux surely to game and be able to game with all games they would dual boot windows?

Why is the ati support so poor though, can the linux okes not make their own drivers for it?

killa - you assume that people want to game the latest games. some people are not serious gamers and so even titles from 10 years ago are fine. but that still requires 3D. So whether the games are new or old is largely moot.

the poor state of the drivers stems form the fact that it is only recently that ATI has only recently started to take linux seriously. i can safely say that for the last 4 years nvidia has been providing drivers. even though they are closed source. but that is something.

Just to point out, there can only be two ends of a range, high end and low end. Mid would mean mid-range but there's no "mid end".

Yes you dual boot to play games but if you have a ATI card the drivers in linux are crap, period. nVidia has good closed sourced linux drivers that work very well and are updated frequently.

ATI always had a **** you approach towards linux until they got purchased by AMD. They release their own closed source drivers which suck. They also released specs and source code to the open source community recently so the guys are busy working on GPL drivers. The problem is ATI is far behind nvidia when it comes to linux support so if you are a linux user you tend to stick with nvidia because you know it works.

The only game I play is CS:S although I have given newer games like crysis 2 & far cry 2 a spin so that is the only reason I have WinXP on my PC.

My next aim is to get an Amiga and Commodore 64 emulator running on one of my computers.

I have previously had UAE on a previous computer. I just need to dedicate a weekend to ticking stuff off my To Do list

Mind sharing? Most of my stuff seems out of date.

When I ran Ubuntu, I got ATI drivers installed and working in Linux. Got it working with many games too ,though at that time the drivers were beta and NVidia were much easier to get working. Have you tried their latest drivers?
