When I was in matric (not so long ago ) we had different poems..old syllabus. hehe. Sonnet 116..."Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments..." lol.

They always tend to put that one in the paper. Easiest one imo. Do u still do this one?

you see, if that were true, then it would be easy ,

the only reason why I score marks is because the poems often have big, seldom used words, and I know what the words mean, so questions like "what does the poet mean by "the capricious glimmers of light on the water" ", I'll know what the word capricious means and i'll say "a whimsy changing of light reflecting off the water" (I know this isn't the best example, but was the 1st to come to mind, and yes, many people don't know what capricious means).

Stupid bloody language papers... I also always seem to get 30% for the summaries!? and It's not only me, there were 6 guys in my class that got 3/10 (not 4/10, not 2/10, but 3/10).

For English, pay attention to spelling, punctuation and grammar

For me , its .... comma after word, no space
    your'll is not a word
    whats should be what

Ah, the grammar nazi's seem to be rearing their little heads.

Great, this could now get very interesting.

Surely "whats" should by all means mean "what's", or "what is"

scotty777 here are some tips for summaries.

    i always score 8+

    1) Read The Instructions - see the purpose
    2) Do not give a title unless they ask you
    3) Write 1 paragraph unless otherwise stated ( read instructions)
    4) Focus on main issues
    5) Only in reported speech - No direct speech at all!!
    6) No statistics , percentages , added information
    7) If you go over number of words stated then its minus -1 mark

Check your style , tone , register and spelling!

Our school didn't even do poetry with us this year. They just told us not to choose the poetry question in the exams.

Edit: To add to the summary advice, always ensure that you write it in the right format. If they ask you for a paragraph and you write all the keypoints underneath each other with bullets or numbers, it doesn't get marked and you lose all those marks.

Knowledge4Africa.com is a good place for thought provoking questions on the prescribed english home language poems.
