US Government Using PS3s To Break Encryption

Did you read and understand the article? PS3 has been chosen because is fairly cheap for the computing power it does offer and because a free OS can be installed! Not because its speed! Actually PS3 is a bit outdated speed wise :D It was good when it come out (a few years ago) but by today standards . . . Look at the specs of a i7-975 quadcore or at the scalable opteron from AMD, if you want to see cutting edge, number crunching, processing speed ! (not to mention the GTX 380 card with 256 cores)

What's the point of that comment? You and most probably will install free operating systems on traditional server clusters as well.

As for the speed, I'd be interested to see a benchmark vs. cost.

Wow, you really have no idea what you're talking about, do you?

The Cell is extremely good at handling parallel jobs. This is exactly what they're using it for; jobs that involve large amounts of parallel processing.

Huh . . . Ok you experts . . . Why do you think the 380 has 512 cores (sorry about the 256 - my mistake - 256GB/sec is the bandwith). The whole 'cell' thing was indeed cutting edge - a few years back :D . Opteron is basically a step up on Sony. A pity Sony is in such a financial mess and could not develop the idea further. The 380 scales up so easy - although is not out (just yet) - they'r already talking about a card with 2 chips on it ! That's like 1000 individual cores on 1 (ONE !) card. And yes I agree, value for money, the PS3 is very good. I believe Sony sales them at a minimal profit and for years PS3 was sold at a loss.

So what's your point!! What's it got to do with me reading and understanding the article!

lol:D, they say that they are resisting temptation to play games and they have no controllers.
