I agree, but they do use their netwook to get bussniss deals, almost like a kickback system, I guess its not illegal, but rather unfair to other tenders for the same deals.

when the stonemasons first came about i think anyone could join but it would be odd if the master and the servant belonged to the same "club", so it seemed to outsides that it was an old boys club for the rich.

Nope, it was during the middle ages. It was basically one of the first unions that existed for the stone masons. It evolved into a secret society and they did get up to some dastardly stuff in the 19th century but they're pretty toothless now. (Literally and figuratively.)
