    sounds like Bonesmen.

    when the stonemasons first came about i think anyone could join but it would be odd if the master and the servant belonged to the same "club", so it seemed to outsides that it was an old boys club for the rich.

    yeah afaik it was a club for the well skilled, well crafted people of Europe during the time of Edward the 1st?

    Nope, it was during the middle ages. It was basically one of the first unions that existed for the stone masons. It evolved into a secret society and they did get up to some dastardly stuff in the 19th century but they're pretty toothless now. (Literally and figuratively.)
