WiFi help needed

Hi

I wanted to know what i would need to connect my house to my neighbour. there is approx 50M-60M distance and 2 Exterior walls(2 bricks deep) and one internal wall.

At the mo I am looking at this equip, 2 Gigabyte 802.11g AP's acting as repeaters probably, and on each side a Gigabyte USB 802.11g sticks.

Will this be enough, is it too much and do you think i will need external antena's

i think that you can get away with just one APN and another WIFI card... or even just two WIFI cards!

if you do experience problems, you can always make 2 cantenna's

One AP and a wireless PCI card with a decent antenna pointing to it should do it no prob.. hopefully those bricks aren't the good ones

A bit more research and this is the new spec. All Dlink stuff, 1 8dbi directional antena raised using hdf400 mounted outside facing the room that is gonna contain a 802.11g+ AP. the antena will be connected to the removable antenna on a 802.11g+ usb adapter. the other pc's will use the Gigabyte 802.11g+ sticks.

My problem is now with the AP's should I rather get a Routing AP that can be connected directly to the ADSL ethernet router. The ADSL router is new and I am not keen to chuck it and get a new ADSL WiFi router as the costs are just going to get too much.

Drive control will be suppling the goods, is there anywhere else in durbs that others good WiFi products at a good price.

Go onto www.miro.co.za and download the retail pricelist. Their service is excellent and the solutions they give actually works. All their AP/BR works on 100mW so you have a better chance of actually going through those walls.

I set up a 10km wireless link with Proxim MP11 2411 routers and 22dbi grid antennas (full line of sight) . When I ping I get an average of 50ms. Sometimes the ping stops and continues again. Is there any way to increase the speed? Or is this enough for Internet sharing. I tried to copy files over the wireless network - it starts to copy up to 200kb, then just stops. Advice would be appreciated!

It seems to me that a lot of people are not thinking very Short term in Choosing kit and some carefull consideration is needed.

I have two PC's with a Crossover UTP that gives my wife the ****s.

I first intending connecting them with Wireless (Should be easy)
I would also like to experiment with a Mesh, (trying to convinve a neighbour down the road) and then also connect to the Internet with ADSL, and Drop my ISDN later.

Question is. Should I Just buy a Netgear Wireless ADSL Router and hope to hit the Neighbour (Netgear should see my Two PC's). Will a Netgear wireless ADSL Router work as a Wireless Hub/Switch without a live Operational ADSL Connection, or must it see an ADSL Connection to FireUp.

Second Option, Wireless Kit and then a Non Wireless ADSL Netgear Router.

The "Jawug" LinkSys Should work to connect two PC's inside House, Then Convert installation to Roof Mount antenna for Mesh "mode" In MESH Mode (Full Jawug Type installtion) will home kit work on WIFI, or do you get a "blind" spot directly Under the Antenna. I am aware that some antenna types have specific type's of "footprint" (Some directional antenna's throw a small mushroomed shape area behind etc etc etc). lookinging at the JAWUG pages, it appears that the LinksSys Kit has Two antenna Connections. Can one be used for MESH/BackHaul and the Other for "OMNI" Type use Directly under MESH/BACKHAUL Antenna for home PC's (the next question is can i then expose different Ports applications to the different Antenna, or am I now pushing things to far e.g Browsing/FtP E-mail on Backhaul/Mesh and Full Fuctionalities on Home PC's.

Summary,

Wireless NETGEAR ADSL Router or Netgear ADSL Router and LinkSys Wireless KIT. (Surfing throgh MYADSL suggests that I should rather spend a litle extra on Good kit (Netgear/LinkSys) Than play with Rubbish.

it just so happens I been doing a lot of testing on a related topic lately.
sometimes you might be lucky and end up in the spillover of your antenna, although you would want a separate wireless connection, (as u stated, for security)

In regards to 2 antennas on the linksys, they are diversity antennas, ie only work together when they cover the same area (only one antenna can send/recieve at one time), you could try connect one directional, and leave the omni on the linksys for local access, but this would give packet loss bothways.

I stand to correction but on the Linksys when you use a grid / external antenna the Linksys is set to use only the one and the other is disabled. I think by default the stronger signal will decide which antenna other wise, the two wont work together.

Please do your self a favour & get some Senao APs with real transmitting power!
Not a 30mw Gigabyte card or a 25mw D(ont) link cards. Dont even think about reverse(Net) Gear equipment.

That is called anti divercity and realy linknothin(SYS) equipment would be able to suite your need in that case scenario my microwave oven has a better output than that...no reply
