Thread: My R600 "internet tablet" and 12.1 inch digital photo frame

Default My R600 "internet tablet" and 12.1 inch digital photo frame

Yesterday while browsing myBB I came across a thread by foozball3000 (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=3494995) He asked about hardware for a digital photo frame. I suggested an Itona thin-client and a Posiflex 12.1 inch LCD monitor. When I got home last night, dazed and confused from the hot Cape sun I though why don’t I eat my own dog food and try to build a photo frame using the hardware I suggested. Too many times people on internet forums suggest hardware they read a review on or hear about and never actually use the hardware. I also thought why just a photo frame? Why not a device that can connect to the internet. As a thin client is a stripped down PC.

And here is the result: http://www.ratemyisp.co.za

Wow that is pretty cool, what was the cost of everything together?

Cracked me up with the pics at the end:

It actually came to less than R600, the other stuff was odds and ends lying around, keyboard, mouse, power cable, USB enclosure. Obviously the cost of the modem is not included in the R600 total. Plus I managed to sell the 256MB IDE flash hard drive I removed for R100. So you can actually minus R100 from the R600 total.

Internet Explorer is a Windows application used to download Firefox. Double click on the Internet Explorer icon and "browse" over to www.firefox.org

I have a IBM touch screen laying around, the same kind Shoprite uses for its point of sale. Maybe add it on Version 2.0

Yes, it can boot and run off a flash drive.

True, I spend more a month on Vodacom data, than it cost me to build this
