Thread: I am going to fix potholes myself - need some help

Default I am going to fix potholes myself - need some help

Seeing that JRA and anyone linked to fixing our roads are completely incompetent, I am looking at contacts how can assist with fixing potholes. There are a number of companies out there who do private and industrial tarring - I need some contacts where guys can give me a better price than what I see on those street-pole ads (i.e. 70-100 rand per m2).

If anyone has contacts, pls forward me details - I would be interested to see how much it will cost to fix a nowadays average pothole (judging at William Nicol and other roads in that area, they go now by 40x70cm - so about 70 bucks per pothole - is a bit steep).

It is illegal to fix potholes yourself.

They mentioned on the radio this morning that they would start hiring contractors to fix the potholes as they can't cope. The main problem seems to be that you need try conditions to fix them.

The guys who do residential and parking lot tarring do not have the capability or knowledge to fix potholes on the road as parking lot paving only has to be a few centimeters thick, but road paving requires proper preparation of gravel, stones and tar that goes to 30 centimeters or more deep. If you want to go even cheaper than those guys you are just asking for problems. Just filling the hole with tar is not going to work.... it would be a pointless expensive exercise. The tar is not even of the same grade.

If you want to do something in the short term just fill the potholes with river sand (not stones - stones will tear the rest of the road apart). But the first rains that come will just wash the sand away again.

Certain potholes are being used as portal entrances to underground mining works. If these "potholes" are repaired/closed up you'll be trapping illegal underground miners.

TBH I could care less. One could argue that it is currently criminal to endanger tax-paying road-users by the negligence shown. I think even the cops would be happy to see a truck with workers filling up holes ;-)

Here in the North West, they fill up most of the pot holes with sand and the top layer with tar, it lasts about a week before they had to "fix" it again.

Since January they have been using cement to patch up their work, these idiots at the city council don't know how to fix pot holes...

Have a look at the Tarfix website, they are Private Contractors that repair the roads, I have seen them in my area doing repairs on some roads...

with the number of potholes, the R114 alone would turn into a beautiful stretch of forest. Not feasible though, on a stretch of 11km I counted 183 potholes.
